The World Cup and the Women’s Sports Pictogram has earned every possible distinction on the field. But sometimes the only thing a girl wants a sandwich.
Golf: Did you come to Golf early or did you mainly play football as a child?
Brandi Chastain: My grandfather loved Golf and I loved being with my grandfather. He would take me to lunch at the local driving range in South San Jose [Calif.]And for me to have lunch, I first had to hit balls. So that’s what I did. However, we never played the course. Isn’t that funny?
G: Do you remember the name of the place?
BC: Oh God, it doesn’t even exist anymore. I don’t even know the name. It was a driving range with an executive short course. It had great club sandwiches and my grandfather thought it was great.
G: Once it became clear that football was your sport, did you still play golf or was there no time?
BC: When I was at the university [I didn’t play golf]. But once I was in the national team and a professional player, I played more golf because it was my way to do something that didn’t cost much physical energy, but was a good mental test for me.
G: Now you are an owner of a TGL franchise. How has that been?
BC: I am very happy to be part of it. That is why I invested in TMRW Sports and the Bay Area Golf Club. What I thought was one, I love golf.
G: What do you like best about the new competition?
BC: I think what I like about TGL is that I see these very polished professionals who, when they are on the PGA tour, should be aware of traditions and etiquette. In TGL they are asked to be relaxed and to be themselves. There are a few who are really good at it, and some who really struggle. So I think it will bring out more personality. We will have some fun. I think everyone can handle that.
G: Do you think that activities outside the course such as TGL and Topgolf can bring more people into sport?
BC: Well, I think it makes it accessible. I think the number one for most people is access, right? If you don’t have access, you don’t have a chance. So for some people with [a full round of] Golf is perhaps the time factor – four to five hours is really too much time. Perhaps it is too expensive to become a member of a golf course or maybe a round of golf is too expensive. But go to top golf or maybe see that TGL makes you excited, and you think, Well, maybe I’ll try.
G: Great. You are known for one of the most iconic parties on the field of all time [1999 World Cup, above]. Have you ever thought about it again to create it again if you have made a hole in one?
