Hussain said had Wood been fit, England could have considered continuing with the powerful duo alongside Jofra Archer in a bid to make a comeback in the series. He also raised the possibility that English management would rest Archer for Wood.
“It’s a huge blow for the team and for the individual. The team because you want all your bowlers available, especially going into the last three Tests back-to-back. We’ve had big gaps so far but after the third Test they’re coming thick and fast. England might not have been able to go with Wood and Jofra Archer anymore, but if Archer needed a rest, Wood could have come in and that’s not possible now,” Hussain said on Sky Sports.
The 57-year-old expressed his full condolences to Wood, whom he complimented for leaving everything on the pitch while representing the nation. The cricketer turned commentator said he hoped the express pacer could make a comeback in the future and that this was not the end of his red-ball career.
“It’s also a blow for Wood, who is such a likeable lad who gives everything every time he plays for England. He is back from yet another injury after eight nine months of rehabilitation, hamstring going in warm-up, knee going in the first Test and now back for more rehabilitation. It would be soul destroying for him. He has been around for ten years and has played 38 Tests. He will be very down at the moment and I hope this is not the last we see of him in Tests,” he added to it.
Wood was not available for that England in the red-ball format over the past 15 months due to multiple injuries to his elbow and knee. After making his international debut in 2015, Wood has played just 38 Tests, besides making more than 100 appearances in white-ball internationals.
