West Brom hired Ryan Mason in the summer as a replacement for Tony Mowbray. It was a gamble that gave a newcomer to management level his first job, and after a promising start, things have stalled for WBA.
The Baggies are 16th in the Championship table with 25 points from 19 matches. They have won just four league games since the beginning of September.
As such, there are increasing calls from sections of The Hawthorns faithful for a change to be made. Mason is under contract until 2028 but the disapproval reached a fever pitch after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to QPR.
However, according to Football insiderthe 34-year-old is in no immediate threat of losing his position as head coach of West Brom. It is said that the players remain firmly behind Mason, and the club hierarchy sees this as a big vote of confidence and will give him time to turn the tide.
Ryan Mason retains West Brom’s support as fans’ dismay grows
West Brom took a gamble by hiring Mason in the summer. He had built a solid reputation in coaching circles from his work at Tottenham Hotspur, where he worked with big names such as Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou while spending two spells as caretaker manager.
However, such appointments come with risks, and early on WBA has struggled for the kind of consistency they need to achieve their goals.
This season, the playoff race is wide open. It’s no wonder fans are frustrated by the Baggies’ inability to capitalize, especially given the quality of their books.
However, it appears the hierarchy will remain with Mason for now. The fact that he retains the support of his players is crucial, and hopefully they will be motivated to raise their level to ensure that their boss is not relieved of his duties after a few months.

A crucial match for West Brom
Mason can keep the support for now, but there’s no guarantee it will stay that way. More poor results and abysmal performances could quickly see things turn around, with fans left unconvinced.
It means the busy run of festive fixtures could be decisive in determining Mason’s future and the trajectory of this season.
Next up for WBA is a challenging trip to Southampton, who have won five of six under now permanent boss Tonda Eckert. This will be followed by a home game against a resurgent Sheffield United, who have also benefited from a management change.
A trip to Hull City awaits the following weekend before a Boxing Day clash with Bristol City. In the final match of 2025, the Baggies host QPR in a chance to show improvements from last Saturday’s defeat.
