‘His job is not just toss’ – Captain Suryakumar Yadav under scrutiny for poor batting form | CricTracker

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has not minced words while talking about it Suryakumar Yadav‘s slump in batting form in recent months. Suryakumar has scored just 119 runs in his past 10 T20I innings while averaging a dismal 13.22, which Chopra feels he needs to overcome as he is also the captain of the side and a key part of the batting unit.

Chopra recalled that the Indian captain’s most important role was to be among the runs as well and not just be available to take throws and manage fields. The Agra native also highlighted Suryakumar’s failure to score big scores in the shortest format of the match, keeping in mind the important 2026 T20 World Cup, which starts on February 7.

“You are the captain of the team, but the job of a captain is not just taking the toss and directing the bowlers. It is not just about making the strategy. When you bat in the top four, your main role is to score runs. It has been a lot of games. If you have an average of 14 in 17 innings and the strike rate is also not very good, you don’t have a single fifty and you have gone over 25 only twice, then it has been a problem on both sides of the IPL,” Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Chopra also took into account the form of Suryakumar’s deputy and opening batsman Shubman Gill. Notably, the top batsman has also found it difficult to get going in the 20-over format, having registered just four runs, including a duck, in the few matches so far in the ongoing five-match series against South Africa.

“If you’re playing at number 3 or number 4 and you’re not scoring points, and they’re not being scored consistently and over a long period of time, you’re not going to be as confident going into the match. [T20] World Cup. So Suryakumar Yadav, the captain, and Shubman Gill, the vice-captain, it is imperative to score runs,” he added.

India are currently engaged in a five-match series against the Proteas. Suryakumar and Shubman Gill haven’t had the best of outings so far. The duo scored just 21 runs in four innings over the first few matches of the assignment, which is not a great result in the context of the Indian batting unit failing to impress.

The third T20I of the series is scheduled for December 14 at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala. The Men in Blue hope that the Suryakumar-Gill duo will shoot in the remainder of the series.
