US Jenson van Emburgh showed his skills this month on a few ITTF World Para Circuit tournaments in Spokane, Washington. Van Emburgh fell short in the first event, but won the second – the heartache converted into triumph while solidifying his place like the world number 1 in his class.

The opening match was the ITTF World Para Future Spokane. Van Emburgh went to the final and came within centimeters of victory. Opposite the French experienced Florian Merrien, he fought through an exciting five sets, but only falls short in a narrow 2-3 defeat. Fortunately for Van Emburgh there were two back -to -back events, so he got the chance to change the loss in motivation instead of a setback.

Van Emburgh also did not start the ITTF World Para Elite not smoothly. In group game he stumbled against the welder Knaf of Brazil and lost 2-3. With pressure assembly, he defeated Poland’s Maciej Negepka in straight games, 3-0, to finish second in the group. Without winning he had a harder path to the final, but that also allowed him to play an extra match while he found his pass.

In the quarters, Van Emburgh faced Petr Svatos of the Czech Republic and put together strong performance and won 3-0. With every victory he established his rhythm and trust – and that brought him well for the knockout rounds.

Van Emburgh ran the semi -final, with renewed focus. Fate combined him again against Merrien – the opponent who had refused him for gold days earlier. This time, on an even larger stage, Van Emburgh turned the script. With sharp offensive play and great calmness under pressure, he checked the momentum, built a lead and ended strongly this time – earned a convincing 3-1 victory. At this point he took revenge and made his ticket to the final.

The championship match brought a well -known rival: Jang Yeonjin van Korea. Jang had eliminated Van Emburgh at the Paralympic Games of Paris, so there was no chance to underestimate his opponent in this match. Van Emburgh delivered his best performance of the tournament. The scores were tight, but he was cool at the big moments and closed a straight victory with 3-0 to secure the ITTF World Para Elite title.

The victory was especially useful, because the Para Elite Series event has larger ranking points than the Para Future Series Event Competition. By conquering the Spokane Elite Crown, Van Emburgh not only rubbed two of his heaviest losses in the past, but also ensured that he would retain his position as number 1 in the world.

We made up Jenson to ask a few questions after these important events:

Question: What does it mean for you to be able to play a big event like this in the US instead of playing abroad?
Jenson: It means a lot to me! In order not to be dealing with such a drastic time change and to be in my home country. It gives me a kind of feeling of how LA 2028 could be!

Question: In the Future Series event final against Florian Merrien you lost a really narrow 2-3 match. What did your emotions come from that match, and how did you use it as a motivation for the elite tournament?
Jenson: It was definitely a heartache, difficult to lose such a narrow final, especially with a lead and just couldn’t close it. I was more angry about it than anything, but I was thinking about taking my revenge in the next competition.

Question: During the phase of the elite group you had a setback against welder Knaf, but bounced back in your next game. That meant that you had to play an extra match and fight through the quarters. How important were those early competitions in building your self -confidence for the later rounds?
Jenson: Losing KNAF was frustrating, but we already played three times this year and none of the games earlier was easy to win. . The beating of Maciej 3–0 gave me a momentum and then won my self -confidence in the quarterfinals against Svatos. Every match helped me to find my rhythm and prepared me for the more difficult battles you lie in front of you.

Question: You have taken revenge against Florian Merrien in the semi -final and then against Jang Yeonjin in the final – two players that you have defeated in the past. What did those victories mean to you?
Jenson: They meant a lot. Merrien beating after he had lost him, felt great a few days earlier, and then to get Jang, who hit me out of the Paralympics in Paris, made the title even more special. Those competitions showed me how far I got.

Question: The final against Jang was a starting victory, but every set was tight. What went through your head in those big points, and how did you succeed in staying together?
Jenson: I just said that I had to trust my game, stay with tactics and stay aggressive. The sets were close, but I remained calm and focused on every point instead of the score. That mentality really helped me to close it 3-0.

Question: By winning the elite tournament, you have provided enough ranking points to stay world no. 1. How does it feel to not only win this title, but also to hold the first place in the world?
Jenson: It feels great. Staying at number 1 means that all the work I have done is bearing fruit. But it also motivates me to keep improving because I know that everyone is also aiming for that first place. The most important thing is that for me, each of these victories are just building blocks for the major competitions such as the World Championships and LA 2028.
