Harry Maguire likes what he has seen during Senne Lammens’ summer signing at Manchester United, trying not to get too carried away with the goalkeeper’s talents.

The 23-year-old joined from Royal Antwerp on an £18million contract at the end of the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils were looking for a new stopper to replace the departing Andre Onana and the inexperienced Belgian looked like a gamble.

However, he has been impressive since joining the team, with his start against Liverpool being only his second game for the club.

He received good reviews for his debut against Sunderland and now Maguire is full of praise for him after his first trip to fearsome Liverpool.

Manchester United came away from Anfield with a 2-1 win on Sunday and the England centre-back was seriously talking to the Belgian ‘keeper.

“I have to say I’m very impressed with Senne Lammens,” said Maguire.

‘I don’t want to get carried away because he plays in the position with the most pressure, it is the most difficult position at Manchester United. But he has everything. Great personality.’

Manager Ruben Amorim will also be happy with the way his new goalkeeper is settling in, after warning fans not to get too excited about Peter Schmeichel’s comparisons after the 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Speaking ahead of the match against Liverpool, Amorim said: ‘Senne did a great job [against Sunderland]. The first impression at this club is very important, maintaining the level is very important and difficult.

‘He’s not Schmeichel. He’s a young guy, he showed a lot of composure and the fans like him. He has to show himself.’

Maguire was pleased not only with the man between the sticks, but also with the commitment and effort of the entire squad as they came away with a huge win on Merseyside.

Bryan Mbeumo put the visitors ahead within two minutes, but Cody Gakpo eventually canceled it out after 78 minutes.

It was the unlikely figure of Maguire who was United’s hero late on as he headed in the winner from a Bruno Fernandes ball in the penalty area.

Speaking about his team’s success, he told the BBC: ‘Staying in the game when they scored the equalizer. Although they had a lot of pressure in the second half and Gakpo hit the post, I don’t think they created that many chances and we felt quite comfortable. Then they open us up with a well-developed goal.

Metro at the match returns to bring you all the analysis from the biggest games of the season.

Here are our team’s key takeaways from United’s dramatic win at Anfield:

Panic stations for Liverpool

Four defeats on the rebound and a first home defeat to United in almost a decade should set alarm bells ringing on Merseyside. The season is still young, but Arne Slot’s chaotic side currently seems a shadow of the well-oiled machine that galloped to the title last season. Ben Fleming – Sports reporter

A turning point for Amorim’s tenure?

While beating promoted Sunderland felt like a job saver for Ruben Amorim, the dramatic victory at Anfield felt like a defining and potentially transformative moment for the Old Trafford boss. A Liverpool winner seemed inevitable as they finally broke United’s resistance, but the visitors came into their own to take the three points themselves. Much of the conversation will focus on Liverpool’s fourth straight defeat, but this was huge for Manchester United and perhaps the turning point in Amorim’s tenure. Is Van Dijk beginning to slip?

Much has been made of Mohamed Salah’s slow start to the season, but is Virgil van Dijk starting to show signs of his age? The Dutchman easily let Bryan Mbeumo fall behind after just one minute, in what is his second costly mistake in as many club games. Ben Fleming – Sports reporter

Lammens goes to Anfield like a duck to water

Senne Lammens’ selection effectively confirmed his status as Ruben Amorim’s No.1 after his solid debut against Sunderland. Wayne Rooney was among those who questioned the £18m deal – especially with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Emiliano Martinez available – but it appears it was money well spent. Lammens denied £125m striker Alexander Isak in the first half and is generally a more confident presence in United’s goal than Andre Onana or Altay Bayindir. Louis Sealey, deputy sports editor

“We could have sunk our heads and gone down at that moment, but we came together, and that’s the most pleasant thing.

The crowd was right behind them and our fans, with what they have been through in recent years, must have feared the worst. It was really important to come back from that and score the winner.”

Amorim added: “I’m very happy for them [the players]They had a great spirit, we should play better with the ball, but the spirit of the team, those are the things we always talk about. A good day for the fans, but now let’s focus.”
