For the first time since June 29, Live Racing returned to Laurel Park on Friday, and although the crowd was modest, the energy in the air wore a well -known feeling of returning home. On a sizzling late summer afternoon, both fans and riders embraced the return of the track after a long-term break-the first planned summer races of Maryland since 2014, outside the Pandemic Disruption in 2020.

The time away was perhaps welcome, but it also seemed to build anticipation. The deployment handle on the eight-race card rose by almost 20 percent compared to last year.

Trainer Brittany Russell, who unveiled a clear prospect in the 2-year debut winner Share Success, was a trainer who liked to return.

“It has been a long summer,” she said. “I mean, you know, look, we had a good summer on the road [at Colonial Downs]But children back and forth trucks and, you know, you still try to maintain this here. It is a long time ago, but it is always nice to be at home. “

Sharing success has fulfilled her name in her unveiling and shoulder pressure before he clearly pulled nearly five lengths. Russell’s runner was not the only 2-year-old who made an impression.

Veteran -conditioner Mike Trombetta turned in the biggest training feet of the day and sent three winners, including the flashy juvenile Merrieveeulen Ultimate Love. A peat allowance optionally claims winner with nearly seven lengths, she can now point to the Selima Stakes.

For Trombetta, the return to Laurel wore a personal meaning, despite his status as a leading trainer at Colonial Downs., A title that he will probably secure for the third consecutive year.

“I wish Colonial would run 365 days a year, but I mean, it is not, but we made the best of it,” he joked. “I like to be here. I mean, Laurels at home for me, and Pimlico and things like that. So it’s, you know, it’s always good to come back here.”

He added that the emptiness of the track stood out during the long summer.

“I mean, I would occasionally make a few trips, such as, if I had to hand in something or get something out of the office, and to see that nothing happens here, wasn’t fun,” he added. “It’s a long time ago.”

Nevertheless, Trombetta considered the adjustment of the planning as a potential step towards sustainability. Nowadays that is an important consideration with the riders now about the financial hook for the sustainability of the industry.

‘I think the [summer break bonus program] has worked well. And I think we will, we will know when they have finished counting all the figures we stand, “he said.” But I think it is something, it is the way of the future, a bit of a consolidation, but if it makes us better run these horses, then that’s what it is about. “

With two-year-olds who held headlines and trainers who are happy to be back on a well-known land, Laurel’s summer vacation was perhaps a deviation from the tradition but Friday showed that the racing community was ready to embrace the return.
