Hall makes the right call with Hez The Boss in the 2YO Classic win

Leader Gary Hall Jnr was spot on as his chosen drive Hez The Boss (Poster Boy) claimed a comfortable victory in the Listed $125,000 APG WA 2YO stallion and gelding final at Gloucester Park on Friday evening.

Hall had to choose between Hez The Boss and the other Heat winner Ideal Whisper who had the better inside draw.

However, Hall had no doubts about choosing Hez The Boss.

HEZ THE BOSS FEB 27 REPEAT

Ideal Whisper was expected to take the lead, but Riptide burned him to take the lead. At that point, from his early wide position, Hall seized the moment to make a challenge for the lead and he succeeded. This put Ideal Whisper in a difficult position, three back on track.

There was no pressure on Hez The Boss at the front and it was clear far from home that the race was as good as over. Hall gave Hez The Boss more control in the final corner and he pulled away to win without extra time against Riptide, while Ideal Whisper, who could not get clear, finished third without bothering the winner.

Hall was happy with how the race went.

I didn’t notice it happening right away (Riptide got the lead from Ideal Whisper) because I was still trying to get into the field myself. Then I took a deep breath, looked up and saw how things were going pretty well for us early on. That was exactly what we hoped would happen. As you know, things don’t always go according to plan in two-year-old races.

He was a bit of a different horse at the front. He was a bit lazy. It switched on and off. When he comes from behind, he shows very good acceleration. Whereas tonight, when I asked for it, it was there.

The $125,000 two-year-old fillies division was won as expected by undefeated Seaside Seranade (Downbytheseaside).

Starting a priceless shot at favorite Seaside Seranade was put forward by driver Liam Elliott and at no point did she look threatened. She hit a six-metre winner over All Out Of Aces, while outsider Made For Me finished a credible third.

That’s now four wins for Seaside Seranade and the Ryan Bell-trained filly is clearly the best of her sex at this early stage.

Driver Liam Elliott was full of praise for his mentors.

Ryan and Tiff have been wonderful to me since I left home. I can’t thank them enough for what they have done. For me she is a very special horse.

It was a huge night for Hall Jr. as he celebrated four wins in the ten-event schedule. His other three wins came via Reset The Bar (Sweet Lou) in the opening event. Later in the evening he won with Final Collect (Art Major), which he trains, and then saluted in the final event with the Bob Mellsop-trained mare Girl Of Brightness (Advance Attack) in another masterful display of front driving.
