Guardiola reveals what he said to Haaland after the Leeds win

Pep Guardiola has opened up about what he said to Erling Haaland on the pitch after Man City needed a late goal to beat Leeds United on Saturday.

City started quickly at Eastlands as Phil Foden scored the opener within the first minute. Josip Gvardiol doubled the lead from a corner halfway through the first half.

Leeds fought back in the second half and pulled one back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin shortly after the restart. Lukas Nmecha then leveled matters when he scored the rebound from his saved penalty.

But Fodne emerged in extra time to save the win for the hosts, firing the ball through a crowd of defenders to secure a 3–2 win and all three points.

Guardiola explained that Leeds’ half-time substitutions caused his team problems after the break. “After Daniel [Farke] changed shape, long balls to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha who were behind, it was always a struggle,” he told BBC Sport.

“That emotion is part of football. We had the chances and in the end we found our goal.”

The match was one of Haaland’s quietest since joining City. He only took one shot the entire match and that didn’t happen until the 88th minute. Guardiola tried to assuage his striker’s disappointment at the whistle after failing to score his 100th goal for the club.

“He will do it in the next game,” Guardiola said. “We only talk about rest. He has a huge body. Minutes, minutes, at that moment you are fresh. Rest.” [is] not just the legs [pointing to his head]. It’s not like Phil or Jeremy, they can rest. Erling is a big man. We need him so much.”
