Laurence Hanrahan hopes on Sunday for a bit of luck from beginners on Methven.
The Harness Racing meeting at MT Harding is the opening grass rack meeting of spring. It is also his first encounter as Methven Trotting Club President, who recently took over from Michael Heenan. It is his first stint as president.
“I’ve been to a committee for a while,” says Hanrahan, “I have had a few breaks, but it will be somewhere around the 20 -year -old Mark.”
Hanrahan says that he is a bit nervous about the weather that leads to Sunday’s 11 racing card (starting at 11.34 am), although the prediction for the day itself is encouraging with 17 degrees and no rain.
“The song looks really good, so we are hopeful that things will go well”
Hanrahan’s also come with a “horse of the day” concept that will be rolled out during each of their meetings.
It sees one horse randomly pulled out before the first race of the day, with the winner receiving a bottle of wine.
If the horses then win the horse its race, it will receive a Magnum Champagne plus $ 1000 from the owner/owners, $ 300 to the trainer and $ 200 to the driver.
“I saw it at another club that did something similar, so I thought I would be on it,” says Hanrahan, “the answer has been very positive. Everyone thinks it’s great if you give things away!”
“Plus the club is always open to new ideas and has been very supportive.”
Hanrahan will also stand in a row two starters, with Bautista in Race 4, the Bus and Truck Bodyworks Mobile Pace (12.55pm) and Elite Styx in Race 6, The Betavet (Junior Drivers) Mobile Pace (14.07pm).

“Back in a rating, 35 Bautista will be very competitive and Elite Styx has her best draw for a while, so hopefully she will get a good run.”
Bautista is a favorite of $ 2.30, while Elite Styx, who has signed 3, is at $ 35, with the Brent and Tim White-Train Clonakilty A $ 2.50 favorite.
