The first hour after most Gopher Football victories, usually what head coach PJ Fleck has made up as the theme of that week. After the 31-28 home victory on Rutgers in the Big Ten opener on Saturday, it was about players hunting dogs since the loss from 27-14 to California on September 14.
Although that may seem random, it is not outside the left field for Fleck.
“We talked about, we had to go hunting,” said Fleck. “State of Minnesota, the hunting season is around the corner. Sometimes you leave the dogs out of the cage and they are ready to hunt, and you don’t see the pheasant, you don’t see the deer, you don’t see turkey. I don’t know what else you can shoot. I am not a big hunter. But you just go hunting.”
That theme helped to bring in context why Star Defense End Anthony Smith delves into barking in the Postgame Radio Program. He was asked by Kfan-Zijlijn reporter Justin Gark what he thought of Drake Lindsey who led a game-winning ride in the fourth quarter.
“A DAWG,” said Smith. “Woof. Woof. Woof.”
Then Fleck joined Gaard for a post game interview, and the coach barked quickly.
With a victory to improve to 3-1 and 1-0 in Big Ten Play, the Gophers just had some innocent pleasure.
A dangerous answers
After a difficult outing against Cal, second -year Safety Koi Perich had a much improved match against Rutgers. The Esko, Minn., Native was second in the team with 11 total tackles and one bag.
Perich had no snaps in the attack, a deviation from the first three games, but he held a role in special teams and his 56-Yard point-back in the second quarter was his largest of the season.
“That was really difficult few days, I know it was for him,” said Fleck. “He had to fight for himself internally because I think it never happened before him. There was a lot of transparency and honesty, and I thought he absolutely reacted elite.”
Injuries are deepened
Gophers -Back -Up who walked back AJ Turner was excluded for the season on Saturday, while no. 1 Tailback Darius Taylor (Hamstring) missed a second consecutive match.
Without Taylor of Turner, the Gophers struggled to run the ball against Rutgers and to manage only 1.9 meters per Carry.
Fame IJeboi had 12 carrys for 37 yards, while Cam Davis had three Carry’s for 8 Yards.
Turner seemed to injure his knee in callas. He needed help from the field and did not return to Berkeley, California, invoiced as a big play threat after transferring Marshall, he had 16 carrys for 64 Yards and one touchdown over three games.
Turner, who came in the season for two years, would be a candidate for a medical rod shirt, but the NCAA to change that policy and to allow student athletes to participate in a maximum of five competitions during their first 10 Semesters or 15 quarter of full-time registration.
Short
Safety Garrison Monroe, who played in the first three games, was the most striking other player who missed the Rutgers game. Colleague Safety Aidan Gousby left the game with a leg injury and did not return.
