Chatgpt rivals such as Google’s Gemini, Xai’s Grok and, to a lesser extent, Meta AI, close the gap to chatgpt, OpenAi’s popular AI -chatbot, according to A new report aimed at the AI landscape of the consumer from Venture firm Andresen Horowitz.
In its fifth iteration, the report shows two and a half years of data on the evolving use of AI products by consumers.
And for the fifth time, 14 companies appeared on the list of top AI products: chatgpt, perplexity, POE, character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, Eleven Labs, Photoroom, Gamma, Quillbot, Civitai and Huggingface.
The companies represent a cross section of how consumers use AI: for general help, company, image and video editing, speech generation, productivity and model hosting.
Five other companies appeared on everything except the first report, the firm notes, including Claude, Deepai, Janitori, Pixelcut and Suno, which general AI use, company, company, image editing and music generation.

For the first time in the series of reports, Google won four places on the list of the best Gen AI -consumer web products with listings for Gemini, AI Studio, Notebooklm and Google Labs. These products now have their own individual domains, so that their growth can be followed separately from each other.
A16Z says that the report depends on data from external market intelligence companies, including comparable web for web products and sensor tower for data from mobile apps.

Note that No. 2 App Gemini De Gap closes for No. 1 app Chatgpt on mobile devices, but with almost half so many monthly active users. It is not surprising that the AI technology of Gemini sees a stronger acceptance on Android, with almost 90% of the monthly active user base. On the internet, Gemini also came in second place behind Chatgpt, with about 12% of Chatgpt’s visits.

The AI studio of the company, a developer-oriented sandbox for building with Gemini models, came in 10th place in the top 10 list with AI-web products; Notebooklm was no. 13. Google Labs, a destination for Google’s AI experiments (such as Flow, Project Mariner and Doppl), ranked at number 39.

The report indicates that Meta Ai and Grok also chase the top AI app, chatgpt,.
Grok became fourth on the web and no. 23 on Mobile. This is rapid growth, given that Grok went from no self -employed app at the end of 2024 (it was first launched on X) until now, more than 20 million monthly active users. In July 2025, Grok also climbed almost 40% when Grok 4 was released.

The general assistant of Meta is on no. 46 on the internet – the same as in March – but it did not make the list of top mobile AI apps. Partly it was hindered by the news that Meta AI shared the messages from some users publicly on the internet without their informed permission.

Deepseek and Claude also saw their growth flat on mobile, with the first fell by 22%of his peak. On the internet, Deepseek saw an even sharper episode, more than 40% falling compared to his peak in February 2025. PerTlexity and Claude continued to grow.
Other Chinese AI makers also achieved the top 20 on the internet, including No. 9 Quark, Alibaba’s AI Assistant (no. 47 on the mobile list); No. 12 Doubao, Bytedance’s General LLM product (no. 4 on mobile); and no. 17 Kimi, a chatbot from Moonshot Ai. Each of these has a Chinese website and sees 75% of its traffic from China.
Seven extra companies on the web list have been developed in China, but have exported their AI technology worldwide: Deepseek, Hailuo, Kling, Seart, Cutout Pro, Manus and Monica.
On mobile, 22 of the 50 top apps were developed in China, but only three were mainly used in China. Top players here include MEIT (Photo & Video Editor, BeautyPlus, Beautycam, Wink and Airbrush), Bytedance (Doubao and Cici), Gauth and Hypic.
Atmosphere-coding startups Lovelable and Replit both debuted on the main list this time, because they did not publish the A16Z list in March of this year. (Note that websites that have been built and published via Replit and via Lovable without adapted domains appear under traffic for Replit.App and Lovable.App respectively, so that they can get traction.)

A16Z also took the time to call AI apps that were about to make the list of Top AI apps, including Pixai, Bolt, Blackbox AI, Clipchamp and Tliner on the internet and Talkie, photo AI, AI Mirror and Arvin on mobile.
The company notes that the mobile list in this month’s report already contains more newcomers (14) than before, because both app stores have long been beaten in Chatgpt copycats and clones, making more original apps possible to find their foot.
