Glasgow Warriors can return to their best in Urc Quarterfinals, says Ryan Wilson … but Edinburgh will face the wrath of bulls

Glasgow has not been in the best form lately, but I still support my old club to beat the stormers tomorrow night and to be eligible for the Semi-Finals of URC.

Franco Smith and the boys would not have been happy to lose from Leinster the previous time, but there was something in the performance that told me that they would not give up their title without a fight.

They would have gone back to the Aviva desperate to make up for the heavy Champions Cup defeat there in April and I think there was enough in that show to give Leinster something to think about, especially if Glasgow will eventually return to Dublin for a semi-final next weekend.

First, however, first, and this difficult draw against the stormers. The side of John Dobson ended the regular season in great form with four straight victories, but it should be a different story in Scotstoun where Glasgow has traditionally been really strong.

It is a rematch of last year’s quarterfinals, who was really a Cagey affair in the first half before Warriors stepped after the break and sustained fairly comfortable winners.

I suspect it can be very good, but I think Glasgow will have a little too much for their visitors to win.

Warriors had a nightmare this season -time with injuries and at one point they did not have trained 27 players recently! So they did well, even to get it that far. And the good news is that the situation finally seems to be a bit informed.

We saw Sione Tuipulotu the first 40 minutes ago against Leinster, which was great news for Glasgow and for the British and Irish lions.

He looked like he had never been gone and showed some nice details during his time on the field.

Having Sione back is enormous in this phase of the season, especially with the Lions tour just around the corner, although it is a blow that his middle partner marry Jones misses again for this.

Glasgow can also recall Henco Venter with the long suspension of the big man from the Leicester match at the beginning of April finally. Henco is one of those uncomfortable heroes who just continues his business quietly, but what an artist he has been in recent years, a real team player.

With Matt Tagerson and Jack Dempsey there is still missing, the return of Venter is a real boost for the Glasgow Back-Row.

Unless Scarlets can shocked Leinster on Saturday, this is ready to be Glasgow’s last home game of the season and there will be a few who say goodbye to Scotstoun on full -time.

The Wil van Venter and Sebastian Cancelliere have been true loyal to the team in recent years.

It is a shame to see them go, but the Scottish rugby seems to go on the road to have fewer foreign boys and mainly concentrate on Scottish qualified instead.

That makes sense for the national team, but hopefully there can still be a balance, because the overseas players have traditionally added a lot of value, especially when all Scotland boys disappear in international duty.

I also hope that this will not be Franco’s last home game in Glasgow either.

We are now in the last year of his contract and other clubs and countries sniffing, so hopefully a deal can be closed soon to keep it here because he has been brilliant for Scottish rugby in recent years.

After tomorrow it is all eyes on Loftus on Saturday lunch, while the bulls take on Edinburgh. The side of Sean Everitt looked good in the second half of their last regular season match in particular Darcy Graham.

In reality, however, Edinburgh should not have left it until the last game before they booked their place in the top eight.

A team of that quality should have been much earlier there and even had to push to try to get to the top four at Glasgow.

They made it a lot harder for themselves than necessary to be the case. The ending of the seventh means that they have an incredibly difficult route in the play-offs, starting with this quarter-final draw against last year’s finalists.

Jake White and his Bulls players seemed to be fired for their recent rematch with Glasgow and it will be a similar story that I suspect this weekend.

They look like a mission not to make up for the final at home last year and I am worried that they will be too strong for a side of Edinburgh who still misses one or two players.

For the good of the Scottish rugby, however, it would be brilliant to see both clubs reaching the semi -final. And, as we saw last year, everything can happen.
