Gio Reyna does not say goodbye to the German Bundesliga, but says goodbye to Borussia Dortmund.
Reyna became an official member of Borussia Moenchengladbach in a permanent Dortmund deal, both clubs announced on Saturday. The American midfielder signed a contract of two and a half years with Gladbach until June 2028.
“Gio brings a lot of experience, in addition to being a young player with a lot of potential,” said Gladbach’s director of Sport Roland Virkus. “We have been watching him for a while and are convinced that he has the qualities needed to help us on the field. He is familiar with the Bundesliga and can play at a number of different positions in attack.”
Reyna spent the last six years at Dortmund and registered 19 goals and 18 assists in 147 performances. He helped Dortmund to win the German cup during the 2020-21 season.
The 22-year-old also spent time on loan in Nottingham Forest during the 2023-24 season.
“Borussia is a fantastic, big club,” said Reyna. “I am happy that the transfer has been completed and look forward to getting to know everyone here, and to grab the coming games.”
His switch to Gladbach connects him again with former NYCFC and the current USMNT teammate Joe Scally.
Reyna will strive to become a consistent performer against when Gladbach starts his Bundesliga campaign.
