Gilles Cervara’s take on Carlos Alcaraz-Juan Carlos Ferrero – Fresh eyes, new edges

In the wake of Carlos Alcaraz’s unexpected split from Juan Carlos Ferrero, many have left shocked.

Gilles Cervara offered a deeper perspective, reframing the decision as a calculated step forward.

Daniil Medvedev’s long-term coach doesn’t see it as a break, but as another step in the elite evolution of the ultimate champion. At the highest levels of the sport, progress rarely comes from dramatic overhauls.

Instead, it is shaped by constant micro-adjustments, mental simulation, and the ability to recognize when familiarity begins to limit growth. That is not easy to process in the case of Alcaraz and Ferrero after a brilliant season, but Gilles continues.

According to his philosophy, champions develop an instinct to sense when they need something different to keep moving forward. That’s something that should be a must-have even if results remain strong.

As a reminder, Alcaraz finished the 2025 campaign at the top, winning two Major titles and embracing a brilliant run between April and October, the most productive of his career.

However, he will have to look for new targets for the first time in more than seven years without Ferrero in his box. According to Cervara, even the most successful partnerships are in danger of becoming predictable.

For players operating on the edge of excellence, freshness becomes as valuable as trust. Carlos will be looking for exactly that in Melbourne, with or without someone next to Samuel Lopez.

Cervara emphasizes that chance is most effective when it is anticipated and not forced by regression. At the highest level, improvement is the accumulation of small details. As always, they demand constant interrogation.

The Alcaraz team’s decision will be answered in time. If you look through Gilles’ lens, change is not a rejection of success, but a mechanism that sustains success.

For now, the 22-year-old will team up with Samuel Lopez, another familiar face in his trade. There is plenty of time to add a high-profile name to the coaching staff ahead of the Australian Open.

The El Palmar resident will make history in Melbourne, attempt to win all four Major titles and become the proud owner of a Career Grand Slam at the age of 22.

“I’ve noticed that these types of champions can sense when they need something different or more to keep progressing, and when that’s the case, it’s very smart for Carlos to keep improving.

I believe, whether it is the player or the coach – and this is what I experienced with Daniil – that at some point it is important to be able to anticipate it in advance so that it is not too late and to ensure that the change is made for the right reasons, in order to continue to make progress.

Now only time will tell if this decision is the right one. Seven years is a very long time. After three it starts to take a long time, and it’s important to stay fresh, always finding ways to improve and challenge yourself.

Even at the highest level, even in a winning team, it is important because the highest level is exactly the sum of small details, and the only way to improve is to constantly challenge yourself.

As a coach you are constantly looking for a balance between what you know will work with a particular player, because you know him or her perfectly, and the search for new approaches.

And sometimes that’s no longer enough, because the player feels like he needs a change of pace. Change is often feared from the outside, but from within it can be necessary.

No one is really in the minds of the team, so it’s impossible to talk about it without knowing the facts. Change is not necessarily bad; it brings new things,” said Gilles Cervara.
