Manila, Philippines -Gilas Pilipinas -women finished in sixth place in the Fiba Asia Cup 2025 after having fallen for a shortage against New Zealand in the classification round on Saturday.
Only one day away from their elimination in the semi-final qualifications, gilas women for the long ferns, 78-71, to miss fifth place in the continental meeting.
The loss of New Zealand, however, did not remove the Filipin’s foot in Fiba Asia division A and they are still on their way to the FIBA qualifications in 2026 FIBA.
“I think we did very well, just come out and play for Gilas,” said Vanessa de Jesus, who ended with 16 points, four rebounds and four assists.
“I am really proud of our group and see where the future is leading. For some of us it is a learning moment to get better and to prepare for the next one.”
Khate Castillo did the best thing she could do in 17 minutes action with 14 points for the Philippines, but it didn’t help. Naomi Panganiban also broke 11 in a losing effort.
Esra McGoldrick dominated for the high ferns with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Emilia Shearer also gave the Philippines some problems with 16 points to her name.
