Personal Hobart Australia 11 and 12 November 2025
Course page and further details
The R program is a powerful tool analysis, but has a steep learning curve. Participate in a two-day workshop that will speed up your R-skills. Our modern approach to teaching uses AI to help you create analyzes with natural language and coder with fewer mistakes, but higher accuracy.
Presenter: A/Prof. Chris J Brown [email protected]
Guest presenter: Professor Anthony Richardson, the University of Queensland and CSiro environment
Costs per day: $ 200 students, $ 300 professionals. Exemption available for native scholars. Register 1 or 2 days.
Day 1 (11 November): Quality data analysis with AI coding assistants
Suitable for R or Python users **. We show you how to use large language models (such as chatgpt), directly in your R or Python coding environment. You can speed up your coding and get personalized help in your research. But there are risks, AI makes mistakes. We have developed guidelines to help you get the most out of AI for coding. We will also discuss the ethical implications of using AI to help with research and whether ‘atmospheric coding’ is suitable for scientists. This workshop is suitable for people with limited coding experience (for example, can read data in Rstudio and make plots) as well as experts who want to know more about AI assistants.
Day 2 (November 12): Generalized linear models (in r **)
GLMs are a powerful tool for statistical analysis and prediction. We will teach the basic principles of the linear model and how it can be extended to all kinds of data in the generalized linear model. We cover the verification of the model, estimate the effect size and the meaning and making predictions. The great thing about GLMs is that you only need a few basic principles and that you are ready to tackle many types of data, not like the old days when you had to know a different test for every new type of data.
- There may be additional subscription costs for AI software up to USD20. Students can receive free licenses. I will e -mail the instructions for obtaining software licenses prior to the workshops.
** Please note that these workshops are not suitable for coding beginners. If you’ve never used R or Python before we introduce you to follow an introductory workshop. IMAS runs one, please contact us for more information about it. If your rule of thumb, if you have Rstudio, you know how to read data in R and make some suddenly that you are ready for these workshops.
