One prompt. Two minutes of research. $419.20 saved on one purchase. Thanks, Gemini.

I was ready to click buy and spend over $2,000 on a luxury piece of fitness equipment, but the price just seemed excessive. I love a good deal and always try to bargain when buying expensive items, but with a website you can’t bargain. Or can you?

I turned to my good friend Gemini and asked if he knew any tricks I could use to save money on my purchase, and it paid off. It gave me a few good ones, one of which worked immediately.

Those of you who have been following my work know that I have been on a fitness journey for several months now. It all started in October when I asked Gemini to help me get a six-pack. I was very pleased with the initial results, although things took a turn for the worse for a few months when Gemini went from being a top-notch fitness coach to a distraction and forgetting my workout plan and diet preferences.

Lesson learned. I started over and Gemini and I are on good terms again. The AI recommended that I could reach my goals faster with better equipment, so as a tech geek I set my sights on a smart home gym that uses digital weight to create resistance.

But there was a problem. The model I wanted amounted to more than $4,000 in my region. I asked Gemini to list cheaper alternatives, and of the five it suggested, I have found a favorite. The price was more reasonable: just over $2,300 including shipping, but that’s still a significant investment.

I really wanted to get it under $2,000, but I also wanted to buy it right away – waiting for a Black Friday sale wasn’t sitting well with me. So I asked Gemini for advice on how I could save money now, and a few options were quickly listed.

The AI explained that I would never have to pay full price for a machine like this. It noted that fitness companies often partner with influencers, sending them review units and providing discount codes to share with their followers.

These codes typically range from 5% to as much as 20% off – a significant discount on a $2,300 product. Gemini suggested I check out YouTube reviews for the product, focusing specifically on the most recent uploads, and search the description for a code.

It was the easiest money I’ve ever saved. There was a discount code in the description of the second video I found. I didn’t even have to watch the video; the code was visible right next to the thumbnail. I entered it at checkout and reduced the price by 20%, which translated to a discount of exactly $419.20.

Thanks for the reminder, Gemini

To be honest, I was already aware of influencer discounts. They exist in the tech world, the fitness world, and countless other industries. However, it didn’t even occur to me when I was in ‘buying mode’. My mind was blank, but luckily AI was there to help.

Gemini also gave me a few extra tips that are worth trying next time, especially if a discount code isn’t readily available. The biggest is the ‘Abandon Cart’ strategy.

Companies have set up automated systems to send a discount code to users who default at the last minute.

The idea is simple: you add a product to your shopping cart, fill in all your details (including your email address) and then close the tab. Many companies have set up automated systems to send a discount code to users who default at the last minute. It is a classic sales strategy designed to win back a customer who decided not to buy at the last minute.

I didn’t have to use this method because the influencer code worked, but I have experienced it with other products. It usually takes about 24 hours for the rebate to arrive via email, although not every company uses this tactic.

I’ve also noticed a similar trick when canceling online subscriptions. When I canceled services like Audible or HBO for “too expensive” reasons, I immediately received retention offers – sometimes even 50% off for the next three months.

This is what AI is all about

It’s easy to replace doomscrolling with an AI chatbot, something my colleague Andrew recently wrote about. I try to keep that in mind and use AI for things that add real value to my life.

I’m already impressed with how much time Gemini has saved me. Research that previously took hours can now be completed in minutes. Tools like Guided Learning also allow me to learn new topics faster and easier. Now I can add another benefit to the list: I save money.

Since I use Gemini so often, I subscribe to the Google AI Pro plan, which also gives me 2TB of cloud storage. It costs $19.99 per month. With the $419.20 Gemini saved me on this single purchase, I essentially paid for almost 21 months of my subscription. Not bad for less than five minutes of work.
