With her work-in-progress-Serve that looks the best that it has so far in this trip to Flushing Meadows, no. 3 Seed Coco Gauff is due to her most solid and stress-free performance on Saturday insaling and no. 28 Magdalena frech 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second week of the US open for a fourth for a fourth us’s open for a fourth uss open for a fourth consumer.
Gauff, 21, will make her 16th performance in the Tour of 16 by a major, break a draw for the second most such performances of an American woman before her 22nd birthday in the open era.
After two difficult victories under the lights at night in Arthur Ashe Stadium, Gauff got the schedule with a 11.30 -hour competition. – With shade that covered almost half of the court on a cloudless morning.
“It was a bit difficult to see the ball,” said Gauff, “but in general I am happy with the way I played.”
Two days after she had made double mistakes seven times and four of her six service games in the opening set against Donna Vekic dropped, Gauff had four double errors in total against Frech and won seven of the eight service games. She stopped 76% of her first while serving on average 98 MPH, with a high point of 113 MPH.
“It has been an emotional week … But I think I needed those difficult moments to move forward,” Gauff said. “I put so much pressure on myself, but I really just tried to enjoy it here and not to focus so much on results, but the process, and I think today it has shown that I really had fun.”
In both earlier outings, against Ajla Tomljanovic on Tuesday and Vekic on Thursday, Gauff was 2-0 behind. Against Frech, she went up 3-0 before she came across a touch of problems: Gauff hit a second serve to make double mistakes and be broken, got Frech within 3-2, and soon after 26 minutes it was 3-all after 26 minutes.
In the next match, Gauff led 40 love, but came 40-30 after the scissors of a forehand that landed 10 feet.
Thousands of fans started to shout and clap encouragement to try to help Gauff. She heard, looked around and grabbed a ball for her next serving, shaking powerfully. Gauff went to the baseline and delivered a first serve of 105 km / h that attracted a wandering return. When she looked the ball outside, she bent forward, clamped her left fist and screamed “Come on!”
That started a set-classification three-game Run and Gauff was on the road. Her serve has become a big problem, so she brought on board a biomechanics expert, Gavin Macmillan, who helped Aryna Sabalenka to arrange her serving yips and to rise in the WTA rangers with three major championships, including in New York a year ago.
Gauff’s title defense at the US Open in 2024 ended with a loss of the fourth round in which she had 19 double mistakes. This season she has been the worst player on the ladies tour in that category and reached a low point last month with 23 in a victory in Montreal, and 14 more in her next game.
In the victories against Tomljanovic and Vekic, Gauff amounted to a total of 18 double errors and lost 10 of the matches she served. What made her through it was the rest of her game: returning, defending and a clear superiority as soon as the ball was in the game.
The last three areas were again strong points for Gauff. She broke Frech five times and was great when their basic exchanges lasted more than four shots and took 35 of those 51 points. She also made only 18 casual mistakes and claimed the point at 10 of her 11 times on the net.
Gauff will be confronted on Monday with four -time large champion Naomi Osaka or no. 15 Daria Kasatkina for a berth in the quarterfinals. She is 3-2 in her WTA career against Osaka (1-1 in Majors) and 0-3 vs. Kasatkina, although they have never played in a SLAM.
