Gary Woodland had a tough Saturday evening and a long day on Sunday that left him on the wrong side of the FedEx Cup -Bubbel.
But he all looks at an optimistic light.
“Many positives of this season,” said Woodland. “It stinks not to go any further. But I am enthusiastic about some peace. I need it. Rest, spend time with the family, get a little healthier and then get ready for the Ryder Cup.”
On the way to this week’s Wyndham championship, Woodland 75th was in the Fedex Cup classification, five slots shy for the top-70s. He was still in the race for the play -offs. But he also acknowledged his continuous struggle to physically and mentally recover from the operation he underwent to remove a brain tumor in 2023. It was a learning process, Woodland said, figuring out how he could calm down his nervous system after the stimulation of tournament game. Woodland went so far to say that he probably shouldn’t have played on the PGA Tour in 2024.
Woodland enjoyed a strong start of 2025, with three Top-25 finishes. But his game has since lost weight. At Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC, Woodland was opened this week with rounds of 67-64 to fight himself, but he flattened with an even rounds of 70 on Saturday and Sunday to complete T23. Woodland entered the last round of Sunday as the bubble boy, expected to end at the age of 70. But he did late bogeys on Sunday his playoff -Lot doomed.
It was a good show, but not good enough, because he finished in the Fedex rankings at 72nd.
He had given it everything, Woodland said. But he also admitted that the excitement of the competition had overtaken him.
“I no longer had gas. I did.” he said. ‘Today the honor of my caddie, man. I’ll tell you, he was incredible. I told him before we started, I had a hard time. Had a heavy night last night, rough morning this morning. He did everything for me today. He led me around. I just tried to hit the shots.
The Woodland season may be over, but his work is not ready, because he will serve as an assistant captain of Keegan Bradley in September in September in the Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black.
In that role, Woodland will certainly have input about the selection of Captain Van Bradley. In the Wyndham, Woodland looked a look at one of the possible contenders, Cameron Young, who ran away with a six-shot victory.
Was Young’s dominant performance a sign that he would fit well with the USA team?
“I mean, the way he drives the golf ball, his statistics this year are really good,” said Woodland. “Cam has a lot of talent and when you can bring a lot of talent, it helps everyone. I am happy for him. Like I said, I think it’s just the start for him.”
In other words, it’s too early for that kind of talk. But at least it is not too early for Woodland to look back.
“It was a good year in many ways, but I still have a long way to go in many ways,” said Woodland. “The best parts of my game are in a really good place and I am happy with that.”
