Jordan Spieth is the best player in the world, says Gary Player.
But he was less glowing about his coaching.
“He was learned the wrong,” said the nine times big winner.
“And he just went downhill.”
Appears on a video that was released this week on the Golf Supply YouTube channel – which you can view completely here – Player had talked about players who bowed their wrists in the backswing, which disturbed him. Once used, he said, “You’re gone.”
Coaching, he said, is the problem.
“You know, there is a huge lack of knowledge with Golf,” Player said in the video. “I would say today in America that golf professionals who teach less about golf. They are much less – and they have all equipment, the technology.
“But I see them teach golfers – they teach golfers to do this [bowed wrist] At the top. “
Player called other golfers – “When did you hear the last one from Dustin Johnson?” – But he focused on Spieth in the video. He said he was a competitor. He said he was “such a great man.” He complimented his short game and course management.
He also wondered where Spieth would be if Ben Hogan had been his coach.
“But man, he just can’t hit the ball,” said player in the video. “You know, that’s a tragedy.”
When viewing the results, Spieth won 11 times on the PGA Tour of the John Deere Classic 2013 via the Open Championship 2017, and not again until the 2021 Valero Texas open. This season, after having undergone an operation on his left wrist a year ago, Spieth posted eight top 25s in 19 Starts.
In the video, the player also called the player he believed the least about the golf swing.

“I played with him in throne as a young man,” said player in the video. “He wasn’t even a 10 handicap. Was not a 10 handicap. He had no idea what he was doing. No idea. But he had the greatest feeling of a man ever lived. He was so good from 50 meters; he was almost someone who ever lived.
“If you don’t have the knowledge, you are limited. You are very limited.”
