GAO says that FEMA has violated the law by blocking crucial aid money

GAO said that FEMA has withheld illegal financing for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program and the Shelter and Services Program (SSP). Both initiatives offer help to people in crisis – including migrants and survivors of disasters.

“The totality of the facts and circumstances here therefore determines the intention of postponing or excluding the obligation of the budget authority for the SSP program inadmissible,” Gao wrote.

The ruling Comes after the Ministry of Interior Security – who supervises FEMA – reportedly do not respond to GAO’s requests for information about whether federal funds were stopped.

GAO added that it will issue further statements about other FEMA funds in the coming months, including money for the program for resilient infrastructure and communities for buildings.

An important democratic legislator weighed the announcement.
