I have some very exciting news for people who like to pay money for things that were once standard: Ford is now charging Mustang Mach-E buyers a little extra if they want their electric crossover to get a frunk. While the front panniers may be standard on 2025 and older Mach-Es, the 2026s have a new $495 “Exterior Option” that buyers will have to select if they want some frankage.
Now, the 2026 Mach-E starts at $39,840 in RWD Select trim, including destination, but if you want it to be equipped like the base level 2025 car, it will cost you $40,335. In 2025, the same Mach-E (frunk intact) started at $39,990. Technically speaking, the base price is slightly cheaper than before, but you get less value for your money. Can’t say I’m crazy about that, folks. I really can’t. I can’t imagine buyers will be too excited about it either, although I have a feeling most Mach-Es hitting dealer lots will be equipped with the $495 frunk from the start.
It’s not immediately clear what’s under the hood of Mach-Es without the frunk. I’m assuming it’s just uncovered electronics and running gear, but I can’t say for sure. Maybe they’re just going to plug an 8 cubic foot hole where the frunk would have been with some kind of impermeable plastic. Who knows? Before you say anything, yes, the frunk used to be 4.7 cubic feet, but the addition of a heat pump in 2025 means it has become significantly smaller.
On a side note, I’m not entirely sure why Ford listed the Frunk below “Exterior options” in the configuratorsince it has been decided inside the car, but that’s actually neither here nor there.
What the frunk?
The frunk isn’t the only standard the Mach-E will lose in 2026. The Mach-E Rally also drops its once standard rear wing and decal package, according MotorTrend. Now the “Raise Rear Spoiler” is a $995 option. In a similar situation to the base car, the starting price is technically lower: $59,735 compared to $60,485, but once the spoiler (and that damn frunk) is added back into the car, the price is actually $1,490 higher. Sadly, the sickly looking Rally decal pack appears to be no more.
Ford isn’t the only automaker that has turned its EV franc into an option. Dodge did something similar with its Charger Daytona, although the frunk isn’t a standalone option. Instead, it’s part of the $4,995 ‘Plus Group’, which adds a slew of luxury features to the massive electric coupe.
We’ve reported back and forth between automakers about the usefulness of frunks, with some saying that owners almost never actually use them. On the other hand. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe says this is because these companies probably only make bad things. I somewhat agree with him on that. A frunk is a wonderful thing, if you ask me.
