James Garner insists Everton’s confidence has not been dented by their disappointing home form as they prepare for a trip to Newcastle United.
David Moyes’ team have not won at the Hill Dickinson Stadium since December 6 and suffered their sixth Premier League defeat at their new ground on Monday as they descended on Manchester United.
Everton have now lost more Premier League games at Hill Dickinson Stadium in 2025/26 than they did at Goodison Park last season.
However, their away results were excellent. The Toffees have not lost since losing 2-0 to Chelsea on December 13. That run included wins at Fulham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
And Garner, who played right-back against United instead of his usual midfield role, says there is still a lot of confidence within the squad.
“I hope we can nip it in the bud as soon as possible,” Garner told Everton media outlets.
“Maybe it was just that clinical advantage that I think we missed tonight. We got into the final third easily enough and we just didn’t create as much as we would like.”
“So I think we are just missing that last advantage and I hope this will bring a few more points.
“It happens. It’s football. You’re not going to win every game. I think every player, every team has been there where you haven’t won games. The best thing is you always have a game the next week, so you have the chance to put it right.”
“Confidence will not be damaged, but it is obviously very frustrating to get away with nothing, but as I said, the good thing is that we have time next week to put things right.”
Amazing.
Not the result we wanted, but thanks @De1878s for another incredible exhibition at our home. pic.twitter.com/dh0sh2O5l8

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Newcastle United – Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey has scored against Tottenham and provided an assist against Manchester City in his last two league matches.
Only once before has he scored or assisted three times in a row, and he did so for Villa in May 2023.
Everton-Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall
Dewsbury-Hall has the most goals (four) for Everton in away games in the Premier League this season (three goals, one assist), with the Toffees winning all three away games in which he has scored and/or assisted (against Wolves, Manchester United and Fulham).
MATCH PREDICTION: NEWCASTLE WINS
Newcastle have lost their last two home games in the Premier League, defeats to Aston Villa and Brentford. The Magpies have not lost three in a row since January/February 2021 under Steve Bruce.
The Magpies are averaging just 1.33 points per game in the Premier League this season, the lowest percentage in a season under Eddie Howe.
It is Howe’s lowest points per match ratio since he registered 34 points in 38 games with Bournemouth in 2019-20 (0.89), when the Cherries were relegated in 18th place.
Everton have recorded the second most away goals in the Premier League since Moyes’ first away game in January last year (38), while being one of two sides to have conceded fewer than one goal per away game in that time (18 in 22), along with Arsenal (18 in 23).
Newcastle have lost four of their last five Premier League matches (W1), and no team has lost since MD23.
Everton won this match 1-0 last season and last won in consecutive seasons at Newcastle in 2012-13/2013-14.
Newcastle are looking to complete their sixth Premier League double against Everton (1993-94, 1995-96, 2001-02, 2020-21, 2022-23). Only against Spurs (seven) have the Magpies done this so often against a team.
OPTA CHANCE OF WINNING
Newcastle United – 55.8%
Draw – 22.8%
Everton – 21.4%
