Malaysians will no longer be required to show proof of travel abroad to apply for a physical driving license card (LMM) from tomorrow (23 January 2026). Applications can be submitted at all Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Urban Transformation Center (UTC) counters nationwide, with the fee being RM20 for Malaysians and RM100 for non-citizens. Seniors aged 60 and over, holders of class A1 and A driving licenses and registered persons with disabilities can obtain a physical LMM card free of charge.
“The public has the option to apply for a physical LMM card at all road transport departments and UTC counters across the country, with applications no longer limited to specific categories,” the Ministry of Transport said in a statement.
It added that feedback from the public showed that many Malaysians planning to travel or drive abroad requested a physical LMM card. To reduce bureaucratic procedures, it was therefore decided to eliminate the need to provide proof of travel abroad.
Anyone who is doing well with their digital driving license (e-LMM) can continue to consult it via the MyJPJ app, which also allows convenient renewal without having to visit a counter. The e-LMM is part of the government’s digitalization plan, in which the digital motor vehicle tax (e-LKM) was also introduced in February 2023.
After the issuance of both digital documents at the time, those who wanted their driver’s license in physical form could only apply for an LMM renewal certificate which costs RM20, but it is not the plastic card we know and which is not valid abroad. Instead, those wanting the plastic card had to show proof of international travel, such as airline tickets, ahead of today’s revision announcement.
