Our record signing Alexander Isak will be sidelined for a while “few months” after a broken leg against Tottenham, an incident that led to a public disagreement between the two head coaches involved.
Speaking to reporters at the AXA Training Center, Arne Slot did not hide his anger at the challenge that ended the Swede’s afternoon prematurely.
‘It was a reckless challenge’ said the Dutchman, via The Guardian. “If you make such a tackle ten times, there is ten times a serious chance that the player will sustain a serious injury.”
The 47-year-old’s frustration was shared internally, especially as the tackle went unpunished despite a match in which Spurs had two players sent off.
The candid response increases Liverpool’s frustration
However, Tottenham’s head coach Thomas Frank gave a very different interpretation when asked about Micky van de Ven’s involvement.
“I obviously disagree in many respects,” said the Dane. “We are talking about a defender who will do everything he can to avoid the goal.”
Frank insisted that the incident was a “natural reaction” and even questioned the tenets of defending when such challenges are discouraged.
“If my defenders don’t do that, then I don’t think they are real defenders,” he added.
That attitude will leave Liverpool supporters confused, especially after hearing that Isak needed surgery to repair an ankle injury, including a broken fibula.
Slot confirmed that the operation went well, but admitted that the injury represents a major setback for a player who is still finding his rhythm after arriving from Newcastle.
“It has been a very challenging and difficult period for him,” our head coach explained, acknowledging the lack of pre-season and the physical demands of the Premier League.
That context makes the blow even harder to accept.
Why Frank’s comments matter for Liverpool’s season

The irony is that Frank had previously spoken warm words about Slot during our recent battle and admitted that he had “greatly admired” how the former Feyenoord coach became national champion in his first season.
Those comments, made earlier this month, now sit uncomfortably next to his staunch defense of Van de Ven.
The challenge itself also came during a match where discipline repeatedly failed Spurs, as Liverpool have now seen opponents receive four red cards this season, more than any other side.
For us, the focus is quickly shifting to managing resources and protecting players, but Frank’s words ensure this incident will not soon be forgotten.
