Appearing on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the American revealed how he changed his approach and put an emphasis on discipline and work, even when he wasn’t particularly motivated. Tiafoe points out that during training it was noticeable how much he was out of rhythm at times and did not give everything.
“I think it’s kind of practice and work that I’ve done,” Tiafoe said.
I know I am gifted with this game. I have a great fortune. I know it comes very naturally. But there are days when I’m in and out, and it shows. I think it’s completely okay to say that.”
There are days when I don’t feel it and I don’t work on it. On the days when it’s hard, I don’t do it. I find an easy way out and trust my talent.
So doing the boring stuff and doing the bits over and over again and appearing. I try to be present in practice and the gym every day. Every day, do the things that I don’t necessarily like and do it the way I like it.”
Next season
Next season could be a very different story for the 28-year-old American, who when analyzing his matches realizes that he has to work even if he is not that motivated. Such a mental approach, judging by his words, can bring him consistency and longevity, with the desire to be where he wants to be.
Frances Tiafoe is currently the 30th player in the ATP rankings. Can he become a top 10 player? It remains to be seen next season. He clearly does not lack motivation, and if we combine motivation, talent and hard training, it can certainly result in success for the great American.
