Pierre McGuire recently said, While a guest on the sheet with Jeff Marek”I just wonder if they have not missed the potential of closing a Home Run deal with Boston to strengthen their goal congregation position.” He asked if they missed Linus Ullmark or Jeremy Swayman, which suggested that there was a chance with the Bruins because “it was fleeting without faith.”
De Bruins eventually exchanged Ullmark to the senators of Ottawa. Swayman remained seated and had a down season in the 2024-25 season. All the while the oilers thought to upgrade in the net, and both mys were possible.
Marek was not sure if Ullmark would have been the best. While he acknowledged his talent and praised his work ethic, Marek had not convinced that Ullmark had still demonstrated consistent performance in situations with high pressure, high commitment. Swayman treated the larger moments. The Ottawa deal with Ullmark seemed to work for Ottawa, although the Bruins may now regret that trade.
McGuire then said that he referred more to Swayman and the stress that developed between the Bruins and the keeper. He believes that there was a chance where another team could have arrived and had made an offer to reject Swayman from Boston. How that would have influenced the Ullmark deal is unclear. What the oilers should have paid is also unknown. McGuire, however, seemed to be convinced that the things might have gone differently for Swayman if he had been to Edmonton and the oilers had erased the concern about their inconsistent goaltents.
