Former 76ers forward falls apart as new rumors reduce chances of recovery

Picking up Guerschon Yabusele shortly after the Philadelphia 76ers made the then-puzzling decision not to offer him a fair price was hailed as a stroke of genius by the Knicks front office in free agency. As such, it simply makes little sense that that same move ultimately turns out to be nothing more than a fool’s gold.

After a highly productive season with the 76ers in 2024-25, which was also his NBA comeback after a half-decade absence from the league, Yabusele has become a glorified benchwarmer in New York. Now it appears the Knicks are ready to pull the plug on the Yabu experience as new rumors point to the Frenchman now he finds himself on the chopping block.

Given how few teams have seen Yabusele so far this season, it’s hard to imagine another ball club actively trying to move the needle on landing him in a deal. Of course, his body of work from last season with the 76ers should still have some lingering effects, but the front office will also have to hold the fact that he was benched against him.

Guerschon Yabusele is in an ugly phase after his breakout year with the 76ers

New head coach Mike Brown clearly has little faith in Yabusele, who has only sniffed out real playing time when absolutely necessary. The Knicks are more than willing to fill some of their frontcourt holes in unorthodox ways rather than simply bringing in the Frenchman, which is likely a very frustrating development for him.

If there is a future in the NBA for Yabusele, it certainly isn’t in the Big Apple. After his breakthrough with the 76ers, he became one of the better commodities in the league. Unfortunately for him, the Knicks (whom he himself chose as his destination in free agency) only reduced his value to almost zero.

New York will do its utmost to convince teams to take on Yabusele, who still has a player option to return next season. Hopefully the Knicks can send him to a team where he can at least get a chance to show that his performance with the 76ers last season was far from a fluke.

Very few players have had the kind of comeback story that Guerschon Yabusele had. And while he’s no longer technically a concern for the 76ers, given the way he poured his heart out for the team last season, one can’t help but hope he gets shipped off to a much better situation.
