Harrison Barnes plays a pivotal role in guiding the San Antonio Spurs’ young core, including Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. He told it Brandon “Spoon B” Robinson“I think the most important thing for us is that we try to create a locker room where everyone is equal in what we do.”
Barnes emphasized depth and shared responsibility, noting several players did their part to help the Spurs secure wins in their 19-7 start this season. “Guys are really a part of that and really fill different roles throughout the season…I feel like everyone is involved in what we do,” he said.
Barnes highlighted Harper’s early development and praised the rookie’s composure at point guard. “He’s been able to balance different usage, different coverages and different responsibilities on the field… it’s been a great learning experience for him,” Barnes explained, noting that Harper has missed time in camp and over the summer but has still adapted effectively in his first 20 games.
Barnes also reflected on his personal journey and recalled a memorable interaction with Michael Jordan. “I told MJ… the only pair of shoes I wanted to wear were the 10’s… he said, ‘Yeah man, you gotta get to a Final Four before you get them.’ Those were definitely my favorite Jordans to this day.”
When it comes to personal growth, Barnes avoids relying on New Year’s resolutions. “I really don’t believe in New Year’s resolutions. I feel like you can always try to make growth and progress at any time. It’s always about how I can be more present and how I can enjoy this experience every day,” he said.
Barnes praised the influence of former teammate Chris Paul and noted the value of veteran guidance. “I just want to see Chris in a situation where he can make an impact on guys. There’s a lot of people in this league that can benefit from him,” he said.
On the court, Barnes contributes 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, complementing Victor Wembanyama (25.1 points, 12.3 rebounds) and De’Aaron Fox (22.9 points, 6.0 assists). His leadership promotes the growth of younger players and ensures they develop alongside Spurs’ competitive rotation.
