Notre Dame Associate Coach Andy Slaggert has announced that he will leave the school at the end of the month to pursue a chance of professional hockey level.
Slaggert was elevated to head coach in 2017 and saw his position during the 2024-25 season and became the first Ralph M. Divietro Memorial Associate Hockey coach in program history.

In his time behind the bank in front of the Irish, Slaggert has had the shooting on recruitment efforts for more than three decades and served in various roles on the coaching staff in 1992. Remarkable names contain a list of 13 people who have sustained their skates in the NHL during the 2024-25 campaign. He also kept the unique distinction to be part of the term of office of every Notre Dame head coaches in the modern era of Irish hockey, after he had played for Lefty Smith and Ric Schafer before they served on Schafer, Dave Poulin, Jeff Jackson and Brock Sahahan. Twice, in 2007 and 2018, he was part of Jackson’s Staf (together with Paul Pooley) who were appointed by the AHCA de Spencer Penrose -Staf of the Year.
Slaggert was honored by his colleagues during the 2009-10 season when he was named the winner of the AHCA’s Terry Flanagan Award for 2010. The prize was mentioned in honor of the former New Hampshire player and Bowling Green Assistant and Eertt an assistant coach for his careerbody of work.
During the previous 32 seasons of Slaggert as an assistant, he was involved in recruiting 70 players selected in the NHL concept (via the NHL design of 2025). That group of 70 includes selections from the first round Ian Cole (St. Louis in 2007), Kyle Palmieri (Anaheim in 2009) and Riley Sheahan (Detroit in 2010). In the NHL design of 2016, Andrew Peeke (Columbus) and Cam Morrison (Colorado) were selected 34th and 40th General, which marked the first time in the history of Notre Dame, two players went into the first 40 picks.
The Irish also had 57 players from the American national team development program game at Notre Dame (prior to the 2025-26 season), while 25 Irish players are suitable for the American National Junior Team on the IIHF World Junior Championship.
The energetic and hard -working assistant has been very involved in coaching at national level since 1997. In the summer of 2004, Slaggert reached his highest level when he was appointed head coach of the US Under-17 Select team that ended second at the Five Nations Tournament in Halle, Germany.
The previous year (2003), the veteran assistant received his first taste of coaching with USA hockey at international level when he served as an assistant coach in the American Under-18 selected team that recorded the gold medal on the World Cup under the age of 18 in the Czech Republic. During the summers of 2002-05, the resident of Saginaw, Mich., Select 15 tournament in St. Cloud State as the head coach at the United States.
A four-year member of the Irish Hockey team and a graduate of 1989 at the university with a Bachelor of Arts, Slaggert also obtained his Masters diploma at Ohio University in 1991.
In addition to his legacy on Notre Dame, Slaggert has all three sons dressed for the Irish, including the current Junior Carter.
“Although my relationship with Notre Dame and the fighting of Irish hockey is changing, it doesn’t end,” Slaggert said. “I will continue to support Brock, his staff, the athletic department and the university to my best capacity in every way they apply. It has been the honor of my life to be called ‘coach’ at the University of Notre Dame and I hope I have represented our Lady in a way that is such a prestigious role. U.”
A national search for the replacement of Slaggert starts immediately.
