Marc-Andre Fleury’s Surprise Professional Tryout (PTO) Penguins has fueled a lot of chatter with the Pittsburgh, but this time it might not be about a comeback. Instead, the movement feels more like a farewell event than the start of something new – and the Edmonton Oilers can officially get that out of the comparison.
Fleury will practice with the Penguins on September 26 and be suitable for a preseason match against the Columbus Blue Jackets on 27 September. Penguins GM Kyle Dubas called it a “full-circle moment”, which gives fans a chance to celebrate the future Hall of Famer in black and gold. Afterwards, Fleury is expected to return to retirement.
That is remarkable for teams such as Edmonton, who are stupid about the fringes of Fleury Speculation. With Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard who forms the tandem of the oilers, many believed that Fleury could be a solution for the mid -season if it went aside. But if he organizes this Pittsburgh -Cameo as a symbolic final act, this suggests that he has moved beyond every temptation to extend his career.
Were the oilers among teams who contacted Fleury?
The Fleury agent, Allan Walsh, recently revealed that no fewer than five teams had contacted a possible return, although Fleury refused to reconsider. His decision to appear in Pittsburgh, instead of entertaining those options, sends a message: his legacy is complete.
For Edmonton, this probably means that it would look elsewhere the target -adjusting help is needed. From Carter Hart to John Gibson, to someone who pops up for the NHL -Handelsdeadline, the rumor mill remains active, but the Fleury chapter may be closed forever.
If so, Fleury’s Penguins PTO is not only a celebration of the past – it is also a clear signal for the rest of the NHL, including the oilers, that his play days are behind him.
