Goodwood RacecourseThe first British Muslim woman who wins a horse race in Great Britain has made her amateur debut.
Khadijah Mellah, then 18 years old, wrote history by winning the Markel Magnolia Cup in 2019, months after driving for the first time on a horse.
On Friday she rode in her debut race as an amateur jockey on Goodwood Racecourse and finished sixth.
“I hope this is an explanation that outsiders and people with different backgrounds can really insist to continue and exceed expectations, and hopefully more winners,” she said.
“This is hopefully the first ride of many.”
The 24-year-old, from Peckham, participated in the Gay Kindersley Memorial Amateur Riders Handicap Race on the Horse Dick Uncle.
“People say it goes so fast, but I didn’t realize how fast,” she said.
“It was a huge buzz, a huge sensation.”
