The top seed defeated home favorite Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 7-6(4) on Sunday afternoon to successfully defend his crown at the Occitanie Open in Montpellier. Auger-Aliassime did not concede a break point in a 96-minute victory to secure his ninth title at tour level, and his eighth on indoor hard courts.

“Adrian is always a very difficult opponent to play against, for all players, I think,” Auger-Aliassime said in his on-field interview. “That’s why I and all our colleagues on Tour have so much respect for him and the challenge he sets on the field. I knew it would be a tough race today, so I’m very happy. It’s great emotions to win here again. I’m very happy with my whole week and especially today.”
After beating Stan Wawrinka, Arthur Fils, Titouan Droguet and Mannarino to go back to back in Montpellier, Auger-Aliassime edged out Milos Raonic and set a new record for most Tour titles by a Canadian in the Open Era. Auger-Aliassime has now won 89 indoor tour-level matches this decade, the most of any player.
After withdrawing from his first round match at the Australian Open due to cramp, Auger-Aliassime now heads into the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam full of confidence following his recovery in Montpellier. Before he takes the court in the Netherlands, he will rise two places to number 6 in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday.
Auger-Aliassime made a fast start to the first set of Sunday’s final in the south of France. The 25-year-old won the first eight points to take control and closed the set with his second break of Mannarino’s serve in the ninth game.
The second set was a hard-fought affair with service taking center stage. Auger-Aliassime took the first break point of the set at 5-4, 30/40, which also meant a championship point. Mannarino fended it off with an unrecoverable serve, but Auger-Aliassime later took five consecutive points from 2/4 in the tie-break to complete a straight-sets win and take a 2-1 lead in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series.
As is often the case when he competes indoors, Auger-Aliassime’s serve provided the basis for his overall victory. He finished the match with 87 percent (39/45) of the points behind the first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats, a number that was increased by 13 aces.
