In the quarters in Mallorca

Signs/results are here.

On Monday I played the round of 16 in Singles and Doubles. In Singles I played Zdenka Koch from Switzerland, who had clearly played tennis for a long time, beautiful strokes, Lefty, good court absenteeism and an excellent return of Serve. However, I moved better and played well when it mattered to win 60 63. She had a noisy cheering section that really wanted to participate in the competition.

Sabine Schmitz and I were eventually warmed up at the Tenzenclub Aguait; We had to get up with son Besso, but the tournament canceled the Practice Court in the morning … but we could buy some time at Aguait that is nearby.

In Doubles we again played in the tennis son Besso in the late afternoon against a German/French combination, Susanne Rosenick Peterson and Marie-Pierre Schneider (the French player). It was the first game that Chris French and I had played together and it went well, we won 60 63. The second set was a good set, both Susanne and MP took their matches and we had a number of scrambling points as you do on Red Clay. It was really only one break from Serve, I think.

Today, Tuesday I play the weather at 9 o’clock that it allows (there is some thunder and lightning going on, or was a few minutes ago and there was some rain last night). We are also planned for Doubles at noon.

Dan Waldman is here from the US and has brought in the R16 in M70 (he plays Andrew Stanley today); Max King and his German mixed partner disrupted the #2 seeds in 65 mixed; Ann Stanley was upset in W75 -Singles, but continued with Andrew; Greg Shephard had a back problem, so he withdrew from singles and then from mixed with Pam. Patricia Zerdan is here with Max and will play 50s next week. They learn the geography of the island and how long it actually takes to get from point A to point B, even if it looks like a short distance on the map!
