Feeling flames like a lost team without a plan or direction – the latest news, analysis and more of hockey writers

The Calgary Flames started in a different direction after the 2021-22 season. That season they were very much a Stanley Cup, but were eventually dismantled in the second round of the play -offs by the Edmonton Oilers. After that loss, things started to fall apart quickly.

Johnny Gaudreau left the organization In favor of the Columbus Blue Jacketswhile Matthew Tkachuk was traded a short time later On the Florida Panthers. Although the flames tried to be a competition again in 2022-23, it was clear that they needed a new direction, and they certainly seemed to go like that.

The flames separated with General Manager (GM) Brad Treliving after the 2022-23 and replaced him by Craig Conroy. Immediately Conroy seemed to suggest that this team would concentrate on building to the future, which, for many, sounded like the flames were on their way to a much needed rebuild.

To a certain extent, Conroy has made movements that point to a rebuilding, because he has moved various experienced players in exchange for concept choices and/or prospects about his term of office. That said, he had little left of many of these transactions, because the players essentially forced their way out of the city. Conroy even tried To sign Elias Lindholm for a long -term expansionFortunately for the flames and himself, the Swedish Centeman was rejected.

Flames do not commit anyway

What many believe that the flames have to do to become a competition is a year or two at the bottom. Many of the top teams of the NHL were thus wrestling for a number of years and the insertion of elitental talent by the design. However, the flames do not seem to be too enthusiastic about that strategy.

It seems that flame management does not go in the direction at all. They just missed the play -offs last season and were apparently happy to be in the mix until the end, even if fans were not. Instead of building on that success and improving their selection, however, they did nothing in the free desk, apart from the signing of back -up goalkeeper Ivan Prosvetov.

Not adding free agents is by no means a bad decision because the patience shows. However, that patience would only be useful if a rebuilding was the attack plan. It is clear, because the Flames have not moved veterans this season, even though they have a lot of value, including, but not limited to, Blake Coleman, Nazem Kadri and Mackenzie Weegar.

Given the movements, or the lack thereof, that the flames have made, it is difficult to imagine that they ended differently than a season ago. That would mean that they would not be good enough to make the play -offs, but also not bad enough to help them get a really high choice in the first round. This last design saw their first choice in 18th place.

Flames ongoing path of mediocrity

Why this is so frustrating is due to the fact that this is exactly the same type of pattern that we have seen year after year of this organization. Even in their ‘good’ years, such as Gaudreau and Tkachuk, it felt as if the management never really had a concrete plan and was just right immediately. One year they would make the play -offs, only to miss the following, but nothing has never changed.

Although things have certainly changed since the Gaudreau and Tkachuk era, that was due to many veterans who made it clear that they wanted to go somewhere else. Treliving has certainly never made big or bold movements to try to shake things up, and from now on it seems that Conroy and his employees want to do that too. It is even quite unclear about what they do, because they are ready to go another season where their schedule is just good.
