In the process, he also became only the second player in the history of the Ranji Trophy to hit six sixes in an over. Notably, the first cricketer to do this was former Indian all-rounder and coach Ravi Shastri, who had done this while playing for Bombay (now Mumbai). However, several others have done it in other formats as well as in international cricket, with Yuvraj Singh, Herschelle Gibbs and Kieron Pollard being the most famous.
In the process of hitting the half-century off just eleven balls, Akash Kumar broke Wayne White’s record since 2012. The Leicestershire batsman had held the record for over a decade and reached the milestone with just twelve deliveries in a match against Essex. Former cricketer Michael van Vuuren is next on the list with a fifty off just thirteen balls against Griqualand West at Cardock, the fastest at the time he did so in 1984-85.
Until now, the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian in first-class cricket was held by Bandeep Singh, who had achieved the feat for Jammu & Kashmir almost a decade ago. He, along with Gujranwala’s Khalid Mahmood, who had also reached fifty in just fifteen balls, held the record way back in 2000-01 against Sargodha while playing at home.
