5 players to add

1. RB Michael Carter,, Arizona Cardinals

While Emari Demercado led the Cardinals in Week 5, Carter was the primary running back at Early Downs.

Arizona Trey Benson was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday after undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus, which will reportedly cost him four to six weeks. That move came after James Conner was landed on seasonal reserve the week before. There was a mad scramble to pick up Carter and Demercado in fantasy leagues as it wasn’t clear who would be the better option coming into the week. Demercado is rated better as a runner and initially made the roster (Carter did not), but offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has consistently used a two-man backfield. Carter was used more on early downs, while Demercado played more on late downs during their time in Arizona. Usually the early back has more fantasy value.

It became clear leading up to the Cardinals’ game with the Titans that the plan was for Carter to take over on early downs. He did just that, taking the same role that Conner took early in the season and that Benson had last week. Demercado stayed the third back while playing the most two-minute drills. Bam Knight was also involved as the primary backup on early downs and took some snaps in two-minute drill situations.

Carter ran the ball 18 times for 51 yards and a touchdown, in addition to catching five passes for 22 yards. Demercado ran the ball three times and all of his carries occurred on third downs. He broke one of those runs for 71 yards but fumbled at the one-yard line, resulting in a touchback.

Carter should be picked up in any league where he is still available as he should remain the Cardinals’ early running back. While he ideally would have gotten better out of this matchup, he could still be a borderline RB2, especially considering the BYEs in the coming weeks.

2. RB Hassan Haskins,, Los Angeles Chargers
