(F) Arm -Dormant: David Davalillo versus the Arkansas Travelers

6 minutes, 52 seconds Read

David Davalillo took the hill again for the Frisco Roughriders tonight while he continues his meteorical turnout in 2025, this time against the travelers of Arkansas, the AA branch of the Seattle Mariners.

David Davalillo, from Venezuela, signed at the New York Mets in 2021 for $ 30,000. That deal became invalid 2 months later and the Rangers signed Davalillo for $ 10,000 in June 2022. He spent 2 years playing in Rookie Ball, apart from one start at Low-A Oost at the end of the 2023 season. Davalillo Really burst onto the scene in 2024 when he put up a 1.88 era in 110.1 Innings across down east and high-a hickory, striking out 113 and walking only 32. He’s carried that momentum the 2025 season, and through and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa and aa. Davalillo has struck out 82 and walked 14 to a tune of a 2.10 era, 2.49 fip, and a 0.82 Whip. He holds opponents against a stunning .163 stroke average, together with a 32.6% K% and a BB% of 6.0%.

Davalillo has a six -pitch mix. When he entered the year in Hub City, he threw a fastball, zinc shed, curveball, slider and splitter. Since his promotion to Frisco, however, he has also introduced a cutter in his repertoire, who during his first start has a number of promising early results for an amount of a touch of 50%. He throws both fastballs in the low to the mid -90s, and they will hit 96. His sweeping machine lives in the low 80s, and his curveball is in the middle to high 70’s range. The splitter floats in the mid-80s and his new cutter is quite consistent in the reach of 89-91. The opinions of his best pitch vary between scouts, but most would point to the splitter. Last year he generated a touch of 58%at that pitch alone, and after having viewed it tonight, I can see why. He locates it very well and is able to throw it a little more than 1,000 rpm, which can sometimes lead to breaking the more glove side, but it is an absolute nightmare for left -handed batters. Disgusting, some can call it.

Davalillo comes from a rare off-command evening, where he spent a season-high 3 walks about his 5 2/3 innings, USA the San Antonio missions. However, Davalillo did well to limit the damage because he only allowed 1 point to score while he hit 4.

This was a very interesting evening for Davalillo. It goes very easily through the first two innings and seems to be in Cruise Control. He had all his fields at work, and especially his splitter and new cutter looked very good. The 3rd inning is where Davalillo encountered some adversity. The Lead -Off Slagman reached the base through a walk where some people (I) would say it was probably a 5 -strike walk. Davalillo’s 1-2 Fastball and 2-2 splitter both looked like they clicked the bottom corner of the zone to show the strikeout, but the referee didn’t see it. Davalillo gets the next batter to hit a flying ball to the right field in two throws, but the right field player finally drops the ball for an error and the runner can continue to 3rd base. Runners on the 2nd and 3rd without outs, and the top of the Line -Up looms up. So what does Davalillo do? Oh, just take out the side to get out of the inning without allowing a run.

These are the types of trips that you really see what your pitching prospect is made of. It is not a game where he can settle in the course of 6 innings and pick up a good amount of strikeouts. Davalillo was confronted with heavy adversity in the 3rd inning, and was able to fight through it and get 3 incredible gutsy strikeouts back-to-back-to-back. The inning ensured that he threw many pitches, so he was limited to 4 innings in the night, but that did not come as a surprise for me, seeing how careful the Rangers are with their pitch counts on the farm. Davalillo did not allow a hit in his 4 innings work and sincerely saw impressive and in the command on the hill. Yes, in general you would like to see the Strike rate a little higher, but with the referee he had tonight, I really can’t consider him for that. I can count on 1 hand, the amount of real waste pitches that Davalillo threw. Even when he missed the zone, they were good pitches that you can still use as a tunnel later in the bat. His cutter turns into a real weapon for Davalillo and really opens his splitter even more for left -handed batters.

David Davalillo lowered his Frisco era to 1.99 after his outing tonight, and it would honestly not surprise me if we see him get a promotion from September to AAA Round Rock. Davalillo is without a doubt a future rotary piece for this Rangers organization, and tonight his mental make -up was completely visible. He mixes all his arsenal and trusts each of his pitches in every count that makes him incredibly difficult to face. He is a top 10 prospect on both MLB pipeline and baseball America, and if you tune into one of his start later this season, I promise you to understand why.
