Tomasson’s relationship with the Rovers board deteriorated and eventually led to his departure in February 2024. He would make a quick and high-profile return to the dugout, taking charge of the Swedish national team a month later.

However, after a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on Monday, Sweden was in serious danger of missing the FIFA World Cup in the US next summer. Tomasson has been relieved of his duties.

Sweden could still qualify via the play-offs thanks to the success of the UEFA Nations League. However, the ex-Blackburn Rovers boss is bottom of the qualifying group with one point from four games and has been sacked.

Tomasson got off to a challenging start of three defeats in four, but won eight of the next eleven. However, after losing three without scoring, a change awaits.

How have Blackburn Rovers fared since the departure of Jon Dahl Tomasson?

Blackburn Rovers hired John Eustace as their replacement for Tomasson and after getting the side to safety he began a play-off push at Ewood Park.

However, Eustace was not convinced of the ambition of the board. As such, a tempting offer from Derby County turned his headand Rovers were looking for a replacement.

Valerien Ismael was called in and his poor start ruined their play-off chances despite a solid end to the campaign, raising their hopes somewhat. Now, after an initial transfer window, the Frenchman is struggling to get results from his squad.

Blackburn Rovers are 21st in the Championship table, with ex-boss Tomasson now out of work.

Back to club football for Jon Dahl Tomasson?

International football presents a completely different challenge than club football. Until the World Cup qualifying campaign, Tomasson looked like he was in control.

Having done quite well beforehand with Blackburn Rovers and Malmö, it will be interesting to see if Tomasson returns to club football for his next role.

He’s handled the championship well, so perhaps a vacant role will emerge that piques his interest. All the while, Ismael will be battling to get a tune out of his Rovers side to prove he is the right man to lead the club forward.
