India completed a 2-0 series sweep over the West Indies after a clinical seven-wicket win in the Delhi Test. After the win, head coach Gautam Gambhir visited the West Indies dressing room on the invitation of head coach Darren Sammy to speak to the visiting team members.
The hosts wrapped up the final Test on the fifth morning in just over an hour, chasing 121 runs to secure a 2-0 series win. KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 58 as Shubman Gill’s team continued their dominance over the Caribbean team, making this their tenth consecutive Test win against them.
The efforts of Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and Gill (129*) helped the team achieve a huge score in the first innings. Meanwhile, Kuldeep Yadav’s 12 wickets over the two innings earned him the Player of the Match award. Ravindra Jadeja was named Player of the Series for his all-round contribution.
Despite the loss, West Indies earned admiration for their performance in the second innings, where John Campbell (115) and Shai Hope (103) hit centuries to take their team to 390 after being forced to follow on. Their fight was praised by Gambhir, who chose to praise their character instead of focusing solely on the result.
“I think the most important thing I also told Darren is the way you guys carry yourselves both on and off the pitch. I think it’s a great learning experience, the way you guys carry yourselves off the pitch, your humility, your humbleness is something that my team and a lot of teams around the world have to learn from. (0:56) I think you’re absolutely ruthless on the pitch, but off the pitch I think you’re great role models are,” he said in a speech. video shared by BCCI.
You have the chance to do something special: Gambhir
He further revealed that World Cricket needs West Indies cricket and stated that when they wear their Test jersey, they have the opportunity to do something magical, which the T20 format does not offer.
“I want to say one thing and it’s something I’ve always believed in. You might think I’m just saying it for fun but this comes straight from the heart. Western cricket doesn’t need world cricket. World cricket needs western cricket. Remember that. World cricket needs western cricket. And a good, solid test team, test nation is a solid cricket nation. It’s not the other way around. So if you wear that jersey then remember that I think you have an opportunity to do something special that not many players who play in the T20 format do,” he added.\
