The Reds were heavily linked with the Dutch defender in the summer of 2023 when he was at Wolfsburg, and talks had taken place between the two clubs over a potential deal, but Spurs were much more proactive in their approach and secured his signature.
Wednesday morning the Daily mail reported that the Premier League champions are once again ‘developing a strong interest’ in the 24-year-old, who claims to have ‘opposed a new contract’ in north London.
Liverpool learns price tag for Micky van de Ven
A subsequent report from talkSPORT Thursday has indicated that Thomas Frank’s side values Van de Ven at more than £100 million, amid suggestions the Dutch international is ‘pushing to leave’ for a move to an ‘elite club in the Premier League of Europe’.
It is unsurprising that Spurs chiefs want to make it as difficult as possible for potential suitors to wrest the centre-back from their hands, and their hand should be strengthened by the fact that the Dutchman still has almost three and a half years left on his current contract.
Is Van de Ven worth £100m of Liverpool’s money?
If Liverpool were to meet Tottenham’s asking price for the 24-year-old and secure his signature, it would make him the most expensive defensive signing of all time, surpassing the price. They spent £75 million on Virgil van Dijk eight years ago.
Van de Ven drew scorn from the red half of Merseyside for his dangerous challenge on Alexander Isak in Spurs’ 1-2 defeat to the Reds last month, leaving the Swedish striker with a serious leg injury that will keep him out until March at the earliest.
However, the ex-Wolfsburg giant has proven to be quite a goal-scoring threat in recent months six goals all this season, and he clocked the fastest recorded speed of any Premier League player when he reached 37.38 km/h against Brentford two years ago.
How does Van de Ven compare to Liverpool defenders?
Compared to Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool’s main centre-back in the 2025/26 season, Van de Ven leads the way in interceptions and ball recoveries per 90 minutes, but is overshadowed or thoroughly outmatched for a host of other key statistics, as shown in the table below from Squawka.

With the 24-year-old not appearing to be a major upgrade for either of our top two centre-backs, the Reds may be reluctant to spend £100m on him, especially after last summer’s transfer market splurge of almost £450m.
Given that Marc Guehi joined Manchester City for just £20 million Last week (albeit with a very different contract situation at Crystal Palace) it seems difficult to justify paying five times that amount for the Spurs centre-back.
