We are only a few games in the preseason, with the season of the Calgary Flames to start in just under two weeks, but there have already been a few storylines that we have kept our eyes on. However, nobody is bigger than Zayne Parekh who pursues a schedule place to secure a place in the team for the first game of the team on 8 October. The pre-season game of Zayne Parekh has been very impressive. He looks like he belongs, and he looks much better than during the training camp a year ago.
Two games are a small sample size, but what he has shown so far has been nothing less than impressive, and if he continues at this pace, a place with his name will be all about it when the regular season opens.
The strengths of Parekh shine through
Parekh has all the attacking capacity in the world; We saw that through his junior career and in one game we saw him playing at the NHL level at the end of last season. His hands are elite; He can get his shot through the traffic with a serious whip behind it, and he skates like the wind. All those skills can be seen completely to start the preseason.
He orders the ice when he is there. With the puck on his stick, he dictates where the piece goes. Whether on the outbreak or when he has the puck in the attacking zone, he plays with much more confidence than we saw a year ago. He is bigger, stronger, faster and more in the command of himself and his surroundings when he is on the ice.
He found his teammates through seams that we have not seen benefit flame because Johnny Gadurie was a flame. Parekh finds passing lanes that seem almost impossible to get the puck through, but he does it with ease and he finds his teammates. There has been no panic in his game. When he has the puck, he takes the time to make sure he makes the right game. When he is under pressure, he takes every last second that he must ensure that he does not turn the puck.
This all seemed extremely difficult to manage for Perekh a year ago; You could see that he did not process the game in Pro Pace. A dominant year in juniors and some time with the NHL club did him wonders. He now makes all the plays that he did not make a year ago. He always had NHL skills, and now he brings them all to see with more confidence than he probably once played.
Parekh’s defensive game has taken a big step
Although it was only a few games in the preseason, the game for the season of Zayne Parekh seems to have taken a big leap of the Puck in its own end. During last season I continued to read about how Parekh’s defensive competition was improving, because I was below the average in his concept year. You can now see that it is much better in his own goal. There is still a lot of work to do, but he is no longer complete liability.
Parekh’s skating capacity is what can make him an excellent defender. He is impeccable, has the speed to catch players in the hurry and his peripheral work allows him to stay low in the zone with players. We saw it completely on the full display against the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday evening. Parekh made countless very subtle small plays that usually go unnoticed, but I am sure that the coaching staff has been noticed.
However, it is not yet perfect. There are still in his own ending that he can climb, and again, it was clear in the match against the Kraken at their only purpose of the night, where Parekh lost his husband in front. However, there will be growth pains; The NHL is completely different from the OHL. Errors will be made and the flames must let that happen to learn. It is all a part of learning the pro game, and Parekh has his entire career for him to ensure that he limits those mistakes because we know that he will make up for it on the offensive side of the puck.
So far, it has weighed more than the good than the bad, and that is all we can really ask from Perekh if he has just started his NHL trip.
A long way forward
It will be important that the longer camp progresses and the season starts, we will have to temper our expectations for Perekh in his Rookie season. So far everything has gone smoothly; He played well, he is praised from the coaching staff, he is put in a position to succeed, and it seems that he may have already had a place for himself during the opening night schedule.
However, Parekh is still a teenager, and as excited as we are all for him to get into the line -up and become a difference maker, it is much more difficult to step into the competition and to have a big impact on the backend unlike an attacker. I already have the belief in the world in Parekh, his capacities and his drive to steer it in the right direction, but there will be growth pains.
The good news is that the pre-season game of Zayne Parekh has been very strong, the coaching staff already trusts him in these matches with the Quarterback of the Top Power Play unit, and he played a team-high 21 minutes on Tuesday evening with a selection with a grid with a roster with a roster with a roster with a roster. They are already putting him up to be successful, and if this preseason has been an indicator, it will be a nice year to see how Parekh gets used to the NHL.
