Cardiff’s First Home Challenge Cup match of the season she saw the Sheffield Steelers in a sold-out Vindico Arena.
Brandon Estes became the winner in the extension to give the Cardiff Devils a 3-2 victory and to complete a four-point weekend for the Welsh side.
“It’s huge,” said the game winner of the Devils. “Every game is important here – you need every point you can get. A point can be the difference, so they are all important.”
In the first period, a golden opportunity for the Steelers at one end was refused by Christian Stoever. In the same open passage of the game, the Devils went against when Cole Sanford inserted on Eamon Mcadam and calmly beat the keeper at 9:29.
Both teams continued to trade the opportunities, but McAdam and Stoever got stuck to keep the score at 1-0.
Early in the second period, the Devils doubled their lead. Stoever started the move with a quick passage to Cedric Lacroix, whose feed, with an assist from Riley Brandt, allowed Ben Davies to bring the score to 2-0 at 22:04.
Sheffield finally came on the board when a Jimmy Oligny High Stick gave them a powerplay. A well -processed routine has set up Dominic Cormier, who shot a shot home with only two seconds left in favor of the man, just past 28 minutes.

The Steelers had bad luck not to level in the period two, but you felt that an equalizer would be in the third. It only arrived for 43 seconds in the period by Mitchell Balmas to bind the game to 2-2. Sheffield then struck the post twice as a Stoever and the Devils survived a number of fearful moments, while a few late punishments on the visitors gave Cardiff opportunities to win in regulations.
With the teams on their way to overtime, each of whom has already guaranteed a point, Robert Dowd’s crochet sentence was transferred to the extra frame. The devils worked neatly for Brandon Estes to shoot a one-timer past McAdam and claim the extra point.
“We had the extra man there, and they left the One-Timer Lane open, so a quick pass and quickly shot it,” said Estes of the winning goal. “It was really fun to play for the fans – we had a lot of noise tonight and got great support.”
