A year ago, who entered the concept season, the Chicago Bears held the first overall choice they had received from the Carolina Panthers in 2023. The hot ticket in the Rookie pool was of course USC Quarterback Caleb Williams, and it was generally expected to land in Chicago for weeks and months before the design. But he was not so sure if that was a good idea.
ESPN Drops Bombshell with Vikings Twist
For weeks it was clear that the bears would choose Williams to finally break their QB curse. However, the passer -by would have preferred other options. The Vikings were reportedly high on his list.
ESPN published an article On Thursday, referring to a book written by Seth Wickersham with the name “American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback.”
The article stated: “After a last season at USC, Caleb Williams was not sure of what he wanted to do when he prepared for the 2024 design. On the NFL Combine that year he met Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. The two made it to play, and Caleb Williams started dreaming.”
The father of Williams, Carl, apparently wanted to avoid the bears, while son Caleb fell in love with another team.
Caleb said to his father: “I have to go to the Vikings.” His father agreed after that, but Chicago closed it. Ryan Poles, GM from Chicago, said, “We are whatever set up.”
So let’s dive deeper into the story.
Why the Vikings?
Well, everyone loves head coach Kevin O’Connell. He is a sympathetic character and has earned the QB Whisperer label in recent years.
The Vikings did their due diligence with regard to all quarterbacks prior to the 2024 design, knowing that they need a follow -up plan for Kirk Cousins, or the aging passer would return for a seventh season or not. Williams met the copper at the Scouting Combine.
That is when the aforementioned conversation between Williams de Jongere and Williams took place the elder.
Indeed, Minnesota was viewed at that time and is still a wonderful destination for every quarterback, but above all a rookie. O’Connell can guide any signal call, the attacking line has two excellent attacking tackles and throwing Justin Jefferson makes the work of a passer -by easily.
The club then prepared JJ McCarthy. He was not surrounded by so much Buzz, but O’Connell and everyone else are enthusiastic to see what he can do in his second season.
Confuse chicago?
According to the article, the Williamses considered pulling every possible lever.
Before the design, Carl Williams said: “Chicago is the place of quarterbacks to die.”
Undoubtedly it has not been a paradise for Quarterbacks. It is easy to make the argument that Jay Cutler has been the best pitcher in Chicago in decades. The last high -pulling choices, Mitchell Trubisky and Justin Fields, were not successful.
Another perspective was that Matt Eberflus was seen as a lame duck coach. The bears fired him after the Thanksgiving disaster. They also separated with the previous head coaches shortly after drawing up trubisky and fields, with a clear dysfunction and a terrible way to grow a young quarterback.
ESPN noted: “Carl Williams was afraid that, with the history of the franchise, stadium insecurity and attacking performances under the then head coach Matt Eberflus, Caleb Williams would not have the organizational support to succeed.”
They then spoke with Archie Manning, who helped Eli to choose his team in 2004, consulted and considered even playing in the UFL for a year and then became a free agent in 2025.
The father-son Duo came to the conclusion that a public attack on the Chicago Bears would be the only way out, but Caleb was not ready. He quotes say, “I was not ready to destroy the city.”
After his pre-Draft visit in Chicago, Williams decided to become a bear.
Anyway, that book is a mini-Disaster for the bears and a little sweetener for the Vikings.
Week 1 thriller
Williams lost both games against the purple rivals in his Rookie season. He showed promising and had the normal Rookie wrestings. The Underwhelming offensive line and the coaching shooting have not held him favors.
This year he plays under former Lions coach and New Bears head coach Ben Johnson. He turned Jared Goff into one of the best players in football, has been a nightmare for Brian Flores and Caleb will have the advantage of playing behind a fixed offensive line.
In week 1, the Vikes travel to Chicago to play a Monday evening football match at Soldier Field. It could be the first of many duels between McCarthy and Williams, the two young quarterbacks of the two NFC North Rivals.
