Ephremova and Pleshivtseev capture ITF J500 titles in Osaka; Gaines and Shao claim J60s in Texas; J200 going on in Corpus Christi; Refat wins W35 in Berkeley; USTA announces the annual Australian Open Wild Card Challenge

No. 2 Seed Ksenia Ephremova and No. 4 Seed Egor Pleeshivtsev won their first ITF J500 titles at the weekend in Osaka Japan. Ephremova, a 16-year-old from France, defeated no. 11 Seed Anna Pushkareva of Russia 6-1, 6-2 to close a week in which she did not drop a set. Pushkareva had defeated top seeds Kristina Penickova 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the semi-final.

PLEESHIVTSEV, an 18-year-old from Russia, dropped only one set, in his 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kunanan Pantartorn of Thailand in the semi-final and defeated 16-year-old Kanta Watanabe of Japan 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Ephremova, together with Penickova, also won the Doubles title, with the best seeds that the seventh placed sisters made, link from Renee and Rianna Alame of Australia 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 in the final.

Non-featured Ivan Iutkin and Egor Shcherbakov from Russia won the boys’ doubles and defeated no. 2 seeds Tito Chavez from Spain and Jamie Mackenzie of Germany 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-6 in the final.

Seed no. 7 defeated Top Zaad Isaac Guerrero Hernandez of the Dominican Republic 6-4, 6-0 in the Singles final and again collaborated with Maddox Iliescu for the Doubles title. Teaghan Je An Keys and Mexico’s Natalia Varela Herrera, the no. 2 seeds, lost in the Girls Doubles final of No. 4 seeds Romina Dominguez Garcia and Montserrat Marron of Mexico 5-7, 7-6 (4), 10-6.

Ryan Cozad, Michael Antonius, Andrew Johnson and Roshan Santhosh are the top four boys seeds and have all won their first round races today. Kori Montoya, Isabelle Deluccia, Ireland O’Brien and Maggie Sohns are the top four girls seeds. Deluccia today lost in the first round of Reiley Rhodes 6-2, 6-1. College Park J300 champion Kristina Liutova is the number 6 seed and plays Kerrville champion Shao in the second round Tuesday.

In a match that ended late last night on the east coast because of wet courts at the USTA Pro Circuit W35 in Berkeley CaliforniaAuburn second -year student Merna Refaat van Egypt won her second ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour Singles Title, her first on a W15 in 2022. Refat, who won two games to qualify, let her only set in her seven victories in the final against Johanne Svendsen van Denmark. But she returned for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory and will come close to the Top 700 WTA when the points are added.

The annual USTA Wild Card Challenge for the mutual wildcard in the Australian Open next year will start for the women next week and the following week for the men. Both have five weeks of windows, but only three weeks are counted for the women and four for the men, for reasons that are not clear to me. The release of the USTA:

Orlando, Fla., September 29, 2025 -The Australian Open Wild Card Challenge, who uses indoor and out-of-hard and carpet professional tournaments to grant an American man and wife a main table Wildcard to the 2026 Australian Open, starts with events in the week of 6 October for the women and 13 October for the men.

The USTA and Tennis Australia have a mutual agreement in which the main top draws Wildcards for the 2026 Australian Open and US Open are exchanged.

The Wildcard for Women is awarded to the American with the most ranking points earned with a maximum of three tournaments during a five -week window, starting with events that start with the week of 6 October.

The Wildcard for men is awarded to the American with the most ranking points earned from a maximum of four events during a five -week window that starts in the week of 13 October and runs during the week of 10 November. All inner and out-of-hard and carpet events at the M25 level and higher, including ATP Tour and Challenger events, will be included in the challenge.

Ranking lists earned in the main table and qualification are counted for the challenge of each player. If the player with the highest number of challenge points earns direct access to the Australian open, De Wild Card will go to the next American in the classification of the challenge points. In the case of a draw for the men or women, the player with the best singles ranking will earn the Wildcard on Monday immediately after the conclusion of the challenge. Americans who otherwise earn direct access to the Australian open are not eligible.
