Emile Heskey says Liam Delap will be good for Chelsea

Ex-England striker Emile Heskey believes Liam Delap needs to ‘improve his hold-up player’ to become a better player but still backs him to ‘be good’ at Chelsea despite the strikers’ problems since his move to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Delap, 23, has scored just one league goal for Chelsea since his £30million move from Ipswich Town last summer after the Blues managed to beat a number of clubs interested in signing the giants, who reached double figures in the Premier League last season despite playing for relegated Ipswich.

And after watching Delap struggle with this season CHELSEAHeskey has told Blues fans that he expects Delap to come good for the club: “Liam Delap needs to focus on improving his hold-up game,” Heskey told aGamble. “It’s such an important asset because it affects the way your teammates play with you.

‘They want a striker who they can shoot the ball at with confidence, knowing it will stick. I think Delap should focus on that and spend more time on it.

“It’s difficult though because people often only care about goals and assists, but I still believe the overall game is very important for him.”

He added: ‘Despite this, I think he was right to move to Chelsea this summer. He believes he is good enough to play for a top club, so he was right to take advantage of this opportunity.

‘He understands the pressure of playing for such a big club, having been in Manchester City’s academy, and that will help him.

‘He just needs to find his feet and that could take until next season. I think he’ll be fine.’

SHOULD DELAP LEAVE CHELSEA?

The boy has great potential, he is young enough to prove that he can become a huge player CHELSEAhe just needs to play under the right manager at Blues, and we’re not sure Liam Rosenior is that man.

The Blues boss prefers Pedro’s pace and movement, as does Enzo Maresca, meaning Delap will have more time on the bench than he would like in the coming months and next season when another striker is signed.

He could reach it easily CHELSEAbut will he get that chance? We don’t believe he will as the Blues board want immediate success, which puts pressure on managers to use certain players as they will deliver results.
