Neil Magny has the record for most fights in UFC Welterweight History on the way to his 35th Octagon performance this Saturday at UFC Vegas 108 against Elizeu Zaleski, and Zaleski sees it as an opportunity to climb back in the 170 pound ranks.
Zaleski, who at a certain point of his career won seven in a row in the promotion with finishes against people such as Sean Strickland and Curtis Millender, comes in again with only one victory in its past five periods. Safe fighting to go back to the win -column, however, does not seem to be the plan.
“We have to fight there and that is what I hope to do,” Zaleski told MMA Fighting. “He is a man who was always in the top 15, so a victory on him could clearly be a game changer for me to go back to the top 15. Of course I go for the victory to be arranged again, but the most important goal here is to place a big victory on him and then against who is in the top 15 is just the top.”
Zaleski has called Magny several times in the past and eventually received his wish for a notice period of four weeks. Magny lost his last two against emerging mockers Michael Morales and Carlos Prates, and was completed by both in the first round, but Zaleski sees an evolution in one aspect of Magny’s game.
“He was tested at everyone at the top of the division, but I have seen an evolution in his struggling in recent years,” said Zaleski. “He is a very good striker, has this efficient clinch in wrestling changes when he attacks. He has become better on the ground with good attacks and great defense.”
“Capoeira” wonders if Magny’s chin is still the same after so many years that competes at the highest level, because a third of his UFC losses came through knockout, but he has the greatest respect for Magny. Zaleski scored four of his 11 UFC victories via knockout, including a 75-second finish on Zach Scroggin last November.
“He has a beautiful legacy and it is an honor for me to do this fight,” said Zaleski about Magny. “If you look at his statistics, he has many victories by decision, so I think we can follow that route, but I see myself getting a knockout or entry. I think we can really investigate that. I am looking forward to showing what Elfdie can do. Show my best.”
