Eddie Howe on possible signings at Newcastle United in the January transfer window

Eddie Howe has spoken about the January transfer window and potential signings for Newcastle United.

The January 2026 transfer window opened on January 1 and twelve days later, no new first-team players have been signed so far.

Will that change?

There are still three weeks to go in this transfer window, with Premier League clubs having until 7pm on Monday 2 February 2026 to sign additional players.

Newcastle United’s head coach asked about the possibility of new players arriving in the nest at St James’ Park for three weeks during his pre-match press conference on Monday morning (January 12, 2026).

Eddie Howe replies: “The issue for us is PSR. So while no one is saying we can’t do this, or we can’t do that, the most important thing to consider is: business now versus business in the summer.”

The reality, of course, is that until things change radically when it comes to closing the revenue gap with the ‘big six’ Premier League clubs, they will continue to be able to pay out more money in transfer fees and wages than Newcastle United, certainly in the medium and long term.

Eddie Howe further says: “Value for money now, value for money in the summer. Sign the right player. If you sign the wrong player… you’re carrying that for a three, four, five year contract.”

The truth is that whether we are talking about PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) or SCR (Squad Cost Ratio) that will replace it, the fact remains that the clubs with the biggest revenues can spend more money within the rules for Premier League clubs.

Eddie Howe also makes the obvious point: “Are the right players available this month (January 2026)?” Some Newcastle United fans would like to see any player(s) signed and money spent. However, given the disparity of what is allowed to be spent compared to certain other clubs, it is crucial that Newcastle United gets as many decisions right as possible when it comes to Newcastle United’s signings.

Eddie Howe summarizes the situation facing himself and the club: “There is a lot to discuss, a lot to think about, the short-term needs versus the long-term for this football club.”

Eddie Howe has had a brilliant track record of signings at Newcastle United over the last four years, from the very beginning when Kieran Trippier was persuaded to join St James’ Park in January 2022, mainly due to the close relationship they have after Howe originally signed the future England star for Burnley at the time.
