Eddie Howe has confirmed that Alexander Isak will not join Newcastle United during the pre-season Tour through Asia, while he admits that the club should make new signing sessions in the summer transfer window.
The striker was sent home prior to last week’s 4-0 friendly defeat against Celtic in the midst of speculation about his future and then did not fly to Singapore with the team.
Initially, a small thigh problem was cited as the reason for his absence, but it turned out that Isak had told the club that he wanted to explore his options this summer.
The Sweden International is a transfer target for Liverpool after they have asked for a potential £ 120 million deal.
After a 3-2 defeat against Arsenal in Singapore, Howe confirmed that Isak would not be on the South Korea stage of the Tour.
It is another blow to what a hugely disappointing transfer window has been for Newcastle, which missed a number of important goals, including Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike and James Trafford. They also have trouble going into their strict Van Brentford Striker Yoane Wissa.
Asked if the Tyneside outfit needs new attacking reinforcements, Howe replied: “Of course we are not misled. We know that we have to bring in players, we have known for a long time.
“At the end of last season we did all the work we wanted. It was a challenging window, let’s see what we can do.”
